Lion buses were pulled from Quebec roads after an electric school bus fire in Montreal due to faulty HVAC fuses. Lion Bus announced it has since repaired the issue in the LionC electric and diesel buses and they are back in service across the province. Lion Bus also issued an inspection bulletin for all other affected vehicles operating across Canada and in the U.S. Read the full article at

The story is another commentary on the challenge of providing safe and efficient vehicles in 2025. Many stakeholder groups have been highly energized and animated around the opportunity to make the case for their share of $5 billion in federal funding support for acquiring electric school buses. Their story has been a simple one: Diesel could never be clean enough and all electric vehicles could do no wrong. This despite the fact that the majority of buses operating today in the U.S. are diesel and these are newer models equipped with the latest generation in emissions control technology that results in near zero emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. Use biodiesel and cut carbon and these emissions further—somewhere over 50 percent from conventional diesel. In the end, every technology has its pros and cons and every school district is different. They have to make the best choice for their situation, all factors considered, whether diesel, electric, propane, gasoline, diesel with bio- diesel fuel. Ultimately, school bus fleet managers own it—day in and day out—long after the press conferences, photo-ops and ribbon cuttings are gone. They must live with the good, the bad and the ugly of every bus and technology. Safety is paramount in any transportation but especially pupil transportation for all the reasons we know and understand. We should, however, never let aspirations get out in front of reality. I’m also a mechanic and [we have] over 100 Lion electric buses. They are repairing and replacing wiring and connectors in the wiring harness. It’s all on the 12-volt side of the electrical system for this issue and the same problem is being found on their diesel buses prior to the electric buses rolling out.
