eliminated having issues on the buses, such as a [child on the autism spectrum] being set off by something. They have something in their hands to do.” Many of the students on the long ride north live and
work on family farms. Huish said their parents appre- ciate the fact that homework can be done on the bus ride, which allows the kids to get right to their chores when they get home and to eat dinner with their fami- lies at a normal time. “We have gotten huge support and praise from our
families,” he added. “To be able to get school work done on the way home, or on a long ride to a sports event has been a tremendous success. The drivers like it because the children are busy and not picking on each other.” Huish also has high praise for Kajeet’s filters, which he said mesh very well with the Schoology hybrid learning software Farmington uses. At first, there were a few attempts to access sites that were off-limits, but now the students know the program won’t allow it. The statistics are also useful, as he said student usage on the buses amounts to about 1,800 hours per week. School bus Wi-Fi is also having a positive impact on
the greater community, Huish added. “Our local hospital got hacked. We took buses over and parked them around their building. They had Wi-Fi connectivity to keep the hospital up and running that day until they could get back online,” he shared. “During COVID, there were vaccination clinics way out in the boonies and we took buses out there so they could do all of their paperwork for that. People really appreciated that help. We have a lot of positive feedback, and other districts around us are looking at getting Wi-Fi now. They know they’ve been missing out. “Now, we really are an extension of the classroom, and a part of our community.” ●
