through on-site Wi-Fi coverage or directly via 4G cellular, if available. After that, users can access the video with a PC or portable device. For the companies providing such
services, improved efficiency is a strong selling point. “Using cloud-based video is a
much more efficient process than the traditional method of locating the bus, pulling the hard drive, and returning to the office to plug in and review the hard drive for the specific incident in question,” commented Richie Howard, president and CEO of AngelTrax. “Every school bus fleet director can save countless hours by using cloud-based video storage, and those hours multiply with the number of buses in each fleet.” Reliance on the cloud also bolsters information security. In the first
place, data stored online by a vendor and with multiple server backups in different locations is not subject to physical damage or loss, as can happen with a singular hard drive or data downloaded to a portable device. While pulling a drive and storing video on a flash drive or other device may be inconvenient, potential weaknesses go farther than that, noted Taylor Moore, the ARMOR product and engagement manager for REI. “This manual approach allows
more than enough room for human error when it comes to returning hardware to the DVR,” she said. “This delays reaction times due to the wait time to access the DVR and can often be an extremely cumbersome effort for transportation.” Limits on who can access video are
available to meet chain-of-custody requirements as is the ability to access the footage from multiple locations. “In addition to saving time, cloud- based video storage should increase the security and confidentiality of video evidence with secure access for only authorized personnel,” Howard said. He advised fleet operators to
ensure that video and data files are secured in a SOC 2 Type II com- pliant data center, which meets Association of International Certified Professional Accountants security requirements and features redun- dancy on equipment as well as triple redundancy on storage, including on-site and off-site backups. In addition, two-factor authentication and data segregation can prevent access to unauthorized personnel.
