While the yellow school bus has the primary purpose of transporting children to and from school, STN Publisher Tony Corpin’s January magazine column recognizes how the bus ride can help enhance the overall educational experience. Read “Are School Buses Really An Extension of the Classroom?” at stnonline.com/go/jan24.

I really enjoyed your article. I truly have many opinions of this but feel that every moment is a learning moment and an experience. I am a school bus driver in New York for 13 years. I choose my bus route and usually have children in private schools with special needs. I always treat my children with full respect and realize that every child is special. I have taught for years in the classroom and then started driving a bus and really enjoy it. Even though the children are 10 minutes from the school, sometimes it takes them 40 minutes to get home between getting on the bus waiting for drop off and getting off the bus. Parents usually feel if it’s 5 minutes from school, then they are on the bus for 5 minutes. It’s a social event as well as a study time and also a time to relax. Anne Marie Ferrara, Driver Katonah-Lewisboro Schools, New York

Connecticut school bus driver Valerie Higley wrote the children’s book “Shaman Rides the School Bus” as a tool to further school bus safety. Higley drew from her own experiences as a driver. The title character, Shaman the Goat, is based on one of Higley’s own farm animals. Read more at stnonline.com/go/iy.

Thank you for this book and congratulations. I’m a school bus driver originally from east Connecticut (Lisbon) and now in Tennessee. Been driving for 29 years. I still use the wave or head shake to cross my kids. I learned from First Student, too. This is vital and so important. I agree that the parents need to be educated, too. Facebook/Debbie Johnson

This is an awesome idea! Congratulations and thank you! I drive a bus and am constantly reminding the kids of school bus safety! Facebook/ Tammy Lynn Humphries

We need this for our school kiddos and their parents. Facebook/Peggy Coston Outten

Congratulations! Every school bus should have one and required by school to read it. Done with love. Facebook/Kathy Bell

That is awesome. I made a puppet for me to teach kids about railroad crossing safety. His name is Railroad Ralph. Facebook/ Stephen Wamack Sr.
