This panel discussion centers on what student transportation leaders can do today to effect change and empower staff to do the right thing for their students.

This panel discussion will focus on collaborative efforts of school districts and private transportation contractors to provide oversight of transportation services, ongoing training, and compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.

School bus drivers and attendants are first and foremost representatives of the school districts they work for. With that comes the responsibility to mentor their students and encourage appropriate adult-child interactions. Social media has blurred this traditional line. Learn from a legal expert how to keep your staff and yourself free from compromised positions.

Parents on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border often live in poverty and may fail to enroll their children with disabilities in school. Remedies can address lack of information, parent attitudes, lack of transportation, inability of parents to pay for transportation, and other reasons. This session will look at the potential for transportation and education agencies in both countries to cooperate within and between states on both sides of the border to get students with disabilities to school.

In this fast-paced keynote address, special education attorney Betsey Helfrich will review recent case law from around the country, discuss hot-topics impacting your job, and provide practical tips for minimizing liability for your school district or company and its employees.


9:45 A.M. – 10:45 A.M. | Frisco 1 ¢The Why, Where & How of Using Conventional CSRS on School Buses Operations & Safety Presenters: Denise Donaldson & Jackie Leach Stackhouse In some situations, the use of a conventional child safety restraint system (CSRS) is the right choice for student safety. However, whether forward or rear facing a CSRS is not always easy to install and use on a school bus. This workshop taught by two child passenger safety technicians will explain when it makes sense to use a conventional CSRS, demonstrate the right way to use one on the bus and provide tips for overcoming common challenges.


9:45 A.M. – 10:45 A.M. | Ranger/Sea Biscuit/Traveller ¢Crisis Planning for Special Needs Transportation Law & Policy Presenter: Julie Jilek The typical design of transportation disaster preparedness and emergency response often overlook the needs of students with disabilities. This session will focus on how transportation providers and school districts can work together to prepare for and respond to a variety of emergency and crisis situations, to ensure the safety of students with special needs.
