when to evacuate the kids cannot change,” she said. “I would want people to be very careful not to rely solely on a fire suppression system and delay getting the kids off the bus. If the system does not stop the fire, then you’ve wasted time,” she stressed. “My opinion is even if you have a fire suppression sys-

tem on the bus, the driver still must make the decision to get the kids off the bus. I don’t see a fire suppression system changing that process at all.”

Leaders of the Pack Clark County Schools, which serves the Las Vegas

area, began ordering regular education and special needs buses equipped with fire suppression systems two full years before a Nevada state law took effect. “We knew the mandate was coming, so we went ahead and did it prior to the official date,” said Paul Shelly, vehi- cle maintenance director for Clark County Schools. “We did not retrofit. We’re phasing them in. We just ordered some new buses with that equipment on them.” Shelly said the district is exclusively using Fogmaker

on 249 of the district’s 1,848 buses. Scott Casteberry, fleet services manager for Clark

County Schools, said suppression systems make perfect sense. “They are good to have,” he added. “They buy the

driver time to get the children off the bus.” Diana Hollander, state director of student transportation

at the Nevada Department of Education, said she is a fan of fire suppression systems, because they buy time for student evacuations. “Whether it is 10 seconds or a min- ute, they provide invaluable time to get kids off the bus,” Hollander said. “I’ve seen buses burn, and they burn up beyond fast. The systems are not overly expensive, and they can save precious time in a fire.” Brette Fraley, executive director of transportation for the Kanawha County School District, had to get permis- sion from the state of West Virginia to order school buses with fire suppression systems on them. Now, he has the Fogmaker on all 42 of his special needs buses, and just received permission to order the systems for his general education buses. Fraley said he had not heard of fire suppression sys- tems before he transitioned from the freight industry to student transportation five years ago. “I never realized the implications of fires on school buses until I started reading about it,” Fraley said. “It’s scary. Every second counts when you have to get a wheelchair off the bus.” Fraley said one of his special needs drivers is espe-

cially happy to have the system. “She actually had a fire on her bus, so she understands how important the extra
