3. Numbers with a line underneath are drying heights – so the land here is 3.2 metres above chart datum. It may or may not be covered by water, depending on the height of tide.
The compass on a chart is called a compass rose. It’s divided into degrees, like a circle, so north is 0°, east is 90°, south is 180° and west is 270°.
When you use a compass on board to check your course, remember that magnetic north is always a few degrees different from true north. The compass rose on the chart shows you what the difference is.
