PORCELAIN MEETS TERRAZZO IN REVAMPED

RANGE Natural stone and terrazzo specialist Diespeker & Co has relaunched its range of porcelain tiles with updated contemporary design options suitable for both commercial and residential clients.

Whilst Diespeker has always offered porcelain as an option for floors and walls, the creative team agreed a fresh look was needed. The result is a collection of handpicked tiles offering a mixture of strong and subtle terrazzo designs, reflecting Diespeker’s dominance of this market in the UK.

Unlike traditional terrazzo, which is a combination of marble chippings and cement or resin, the porcelain style terrazzo is actually printed onto the tile. Although the material doesn’t have the exact appearance of terrazzo, it offers a number of advantages, such as increased durability - as porcelain tiles are heated at high temperatures, the result is a rigid material impenetrable to moisture. Other benefits include it being lightweight, thin, suitable for indoor and outdoor use and adverse

ODHRAN TAKES HOME GOLD AT SKILLBUILD

2018 Odhran Connelly, from Southern Regional College in Northern Ireland, was victorious at the SkillBuild 2018 National Finals in Wall and Floor Tiling.

Odhran beat off stiff competition from silver medallist James Ackland (Cardiff and Vale College), bronze medallist Mariusz Kanjecki (City of Glasgow College), Callum Pearson (Highly Commended, from Leeds College of Building) and four other competitors.

The finals of the national construction competition for apprentices and trainees took place at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th

– 17th November as part of the WorldSkills UK Live exhibition.

Throughout the three-day, 18-hour competition, contestants were asked to tile a wall and floor based on a 3D building design and 150mm x 150mm ceramic tiles.

Competitors fixed the tiles with BAL — 06 —

Max Flex Fibre and BAL Rapid-Flex One and grouted with BAL Micromax2 Snow including BAL Micromax Sealant for all movement joints.

Other materials were supplied by TTA members including N&C and Schluter Systems, with Sigma contributing to the prize giveaways.

Dave Rowley, BAL Training Manager and lead judge for SkillBuild 2018, said: “Many congratulations to Odhran for winning a hard-fought final competition. The standard of fixing throughout the three days was exceptionally high which made adjudicating very hard.

“As a company, we are committed to training the next generation of tilers to a high standard, so supporting the SkillBuild competition is a priority of ours. Competitions like these help raise standards and give trainees and apprentices a focus and standard to work towards.”

SkillBuild is now in its sixth year and is run by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). The competition sees the very best students from Regional

weather conditions, non-slip, stain- resistant, and available in three finishes (polished, honed and non-slip).

Of the eight tiles currently available to order, three are based on Diespeker’s most popular standard terrazzo designs including TE007, recreated as porcelain and aptly named PC007. The tiles are only 10mm thick and with four sizes available, they offer versatility for a wide variety of wall or floor projects.

Diespeker MD, John Krause, said: “We’re very excited about the opportunities presented by the new range of terrazzo effect porcelain tiles.

“With a thinner profile and non-slip properties, the tiles open up additional design possibilities for our clients - including mix and match with our real terrazzo.”

Diespeker plans to extend the range over the next few months with further popular terrazzo designs.
