SURFACE DESIGN SHOW 2019 PREVIEW SCRATCHING THE SURFACE

Back for 2019, we take a look at what the next edition of the Surface Design Show will have to offer for tiling professionals, flooring contractors, and interior designers alike.

From 5th-7th February, Surface Design Show 2019 will take place at London’s Business Design Centre to provide a platform for architects, designers and specifiers to explore the best in interior and exterior surface materials, lighting design, development and innovation.

Surface Design Show 2019 also features three stages hosting some 40 presentations from over 50 industry professionals, all designed to engage and inspire.

Stone Gallery

Stone has been used in building and design for centuries and is a proven favourite from its continued dominance. The 2016 Surface Design Show hosted the launch of Stone Gallery, which has played an important role in the Show ever since. Stone Gallery, whose media partner is Tomorrow’s Tile & Stone, is an industry-leading event for architects and designers to meet and specify natural stone. The gallery is officially supported by Stone Federation GB, whose Knowledge Hub forms a focal point for the event.

The Stone Hub, a stage dedicated to debates and discussion around natural stone, will be curated by Arup. The Hub brings the A&D sector together on the last day of the Show, Thursday 7th

February, to listen and learn from leading designers in the

sector. Presentations so far include;

11:30 – 12:15 – Sourcing Exquisite Marble by Paola Blasi, Arup.

13:30 – 14:15 – Stone in Innovative Façade Design by Ed Forwood and Paola Blasi, Arup.

15:30 – 16:15 – Structural Stone Staircases by Tom Clewlow and Jemima French, Arup.

Surface Design Awards Since 2013, the surface Design Show has hosted the Surface Design Awards, now recognised as one of the most respected events in the design calendar. The 2019 Awards received a record 197 entries from 22 countries, including America, Italy, China and India.

The shortlist consists of an impressive 43 projects across seven categories, each entry is an exemplary example of creative and innovative use of materials and lighting in both interior and exterior schemes. Of the finalists is Altered States by Caesarstone, in collaboration with Snarkitecture, which used quartz surfaces in its immersive installation. At the centre of the space, a majestic circular island, made of multiple layers of Caesarstone quartz, explored the changing states of water from ice to liquid to steam. textured walls. The judges expressed they felt the project was magical, with Jeremy Offer, Chief Design Officer at Arrival, commenting that there was “a tranquil monastic feel to it” highlighting “time, place and emotion.” Retail Exterior finalist, Lava Stone Shopfront by STAC Architecture used Volceram cast basalt tiles which were chosen for their visual depth, varying colour tones as well as their extremely robust, nonporous and stain resistant finish. The Awards Presentation will take place on the morning of Thursday 7th February, at Surface Design Show. Tickets to the Presentation are available via the Surface Design Show website. Award partners include; James Latham, FINSA, Business Design Centre, Soluis and Roof Maker.
