STEP INSIDE LIVING SPACES Life’s a Beach
Combining the beauty of nature with modern, industrial style, architects used Havwoods flooring to create a stunning interior at a holiday home situated on the South East coastline.
Set within the Dungeness Estate, a stark and open headland on the Kent and Sussex coast, Pobble House is an award- winning, architect- designed holiday home which takes its name from the old Kentish word for pebble.
With the headland home to Europe’s largest expanse of shingle, it has been classified as Britain’s only desert and hosts a vast array of wildlife, plant species and migratory birds, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the UK. As a result, this unique landscape has been recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a National Nature Reserve, Conservation Area and Special Landscape Area. Although a setting of immense natural beauty, the landscape is characterised by significant urban contrast with the Dungeness Nuclear Power station and its two lighthouses dominating the coastline.
Inspired by the juxtaposition between nature and industrial architecture, the interior and living spaces of the Pobble House are designed with a minimal aesthetic that embraces sleek linear structures, contrasting materials including Havwoods flooring and vast angular windows that frame the surrounding views.
With practices in both London and Kent, Guy Hollaway Architects were chosen to bring the Pobble House to life. The distinctive exterior is testament to the vision of Guy Hollaway and his team, with materials such as Larch cladding designed to weather with time, whilst cement fibreboards were carefully selected for lasting visual contrast. Owing to the site’s cultural and natural significance, strict planning regulations dictated much of the internal layout as the new structure needed to be of a similar scale and proportion to that of the original dwelling.
Once inside, the Pobble House is organised along a linear corridor, which runs along the full length of the building and is perfectly aligned with the nearby lighthouse to offer the

best views possible. Havwoods Venture Oak flooring is used throughout the hall, living areas and bedrooms to establish a consistency in design across all aspects of this unique property.
At its southern most point, the space opens up to reveal a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with plenty of room to
coexist with the whole family or entertain with friends. Making the most of all available space, floor to ceiling cabinets are used in the kitchen to ensure plenty of storage space for the essentials, whilst the dining table is carefully tucked away in the alcove to maintain the simplicity of the open-plan layout. In the living area, the corner of the building is able to open up to the landscape with a bespoke corner-to-corner glass sliding door creating transitional inside-outside living perfect for the summer and an adjacent decking area exposed to the full beauty of the wilderness outside. A bespoke central wood burner helps to establish the open-plan living space as the heart of the home and is accompanied by a combination of large format glazing and picture windows that achieve almost panoramic views over the spectacular site.
The styling of the Pobble House interior is kept fairly simple to pay homage to the surrounding views, with the white walls providing the perfect blank canvas to highlight the diverse landscape just outside the property walls. Havwoods Venture Plank in Fendi is used throughout, chosen for its emulation of the complex yet subtle tones of the Dungeness shingle and ability to introduce welcome warmth and texture to the space. The silver hue of the oak allows the flooring to blend effortlessly with the decking area and views to the rustic coastline beyond. Embracing quality and contrast at its core, The Pobble House creates an entirely individual living space that combines modern technology with a lasting connection to the unique natural environment of Dungeness.
