UK Carpet Types Product Mix 2013 – By Value (%)

Fibre Bonded 6%

Woven 15%

Others 6%

Tufted 73%

CARPET MATERIAL MIX The various carpet types have seen little change in value share since 2006, and the market remains strongly dominated by tufted carpets, as shown in the chart above. The most popular types of tufted carpet remain loop pile and twist pile. Woven carpets accounted for an estimated 15% value share in 2013 reflecting a marginal decline since 2010, as high-value wovens have lost some popularity.

CARPET MARKET SHARE

• As can be seen in the charts, carpets have lost share compared to other materials, but there has been relatively little change since 2007 and it is estimated that the wood and laminate floorcovering sector peaked in 2007.

• Carpets still dominate the floorcovering mix, in value terms. There has been some share gain in the vinyl sector in recent years as a result of sustained demand in the contractor vinyl sector.

• The enduring popularity of carpet is particularly prevalent among homeowners, despite changing fashions in floorcoverings and home

decor. The majority of households still own carpet in at least one room.

• The insurance replacement market has helped to boost sales, particularly in the wake of high incidence of flooding in some areas of the UK in 2012 and 2014.

• Product development is also driving sales within the carpet market. There has been a rise in popularity of synthetics, stimulated by the development of new, soft-touch synthetic fibres.

• Rising wool prices have made wool carpets more expensive, and there has been a shift towards lower cost materials.

There has been a shift in demand from highly patterned natural wovens towards plain synthetics. Fibre bonded and other types have both maintained a share of around 6% each. As indicated above, wovens have seen a steady loss of share as consumers look to lower- priced plain colours, but the contract market remains a key specifier of high- quality woven products.
