I can’t believe that it’s Yearbook time again! It seems that the years are flying by and whilst the FM industry is renowned for ‘making do and muddling through’,
there have been some significant and notable changes in the last year that have impacted as much on our daily lives as our professional ones.
The first of these was of course the Brexit vote, which took place only shortly after our last printed edition; since then, it’s fair to say things have been turbulent. Following the election of the first female Prime Minister since Thatcher, the nature of our transition from ‘in’ to ‘out’ of the EU still seems unclear. And
whilst we are still reeling from the general election results, we once again face challenging times.
However, if I have learned one thing in my time in the facilities industry, it’s that you are a resilient bunch. Very little seems to affect the smooth-running of the
UK’s buildings; be it political uncertainty or terror attacks, our industry, like our nation, pulls it together and keeps on going.

It is often joked that the only thing capable of grinding things to a halt in Britain is adverse weather, and for the most part this appears to be true – with FM appearing as the exception that proves the rule. We have gritters to protect our
car parks, entrance matting to prevent slips and dirt, lights to aid visibility, flood defences, maintenance teams to stop leaks, and robust health & safety plans in place to ensure that facilities run safely and smoothly whatever the weather.
So whilst the outlook for our country is not yet clear, the expectations for our
industry are; we will do our best to keep the UK’s buildings running smoothly and efficiently, and if anyone asks about the future of FM you can tell them, it is as bright as Donald Trump’s hair.
