A holistic approach for facilities management clients involves a consultation to understand the client and their needs. A discussion will then take place around suggestions for improving efficiency of their existing systems and assets by monitoring performance and asset replacements.


An example of a holistic approach is the need to balance installation costs against operational outgoings. With solar panels, for instance, it would be a mistake to

consider the cost of the panels and set up in isolation. In reality, operation accounts for 95% of the life cycle costs.


A calculation must be considered to assess how many years it will take to see a return of investment on the installed assets. Solar panels last a total of 20 years but it now takes close to three years to see gains as opposed to the previous span of seven to ten years. This approach should include modelling based on the client profile and unique energy consumption. Then accurate results can be forecasted in order to minimise import and export of energy. Viewed through the lens of a holistic approach, a whole roof of solar panels is often proved unsuitable as it would lead to inefficient excess energy generation.


Smart solutions for the future Whilst businesses have been given an emergency package of support to counteract wholesale power prices over the next six months, once this government support ends, the industry needs to have its own smart solutions for dealing with an uncertain energy market.


The energy usage in buildings has been reduced significantly over the last 20 years but can be reduced even further. Facility management companies are well- positioned to track the performance of their facilities. By doing so, they can provide excellent advice to their clients to improve efficiencies.
