10 QUESTIONS WITH... PAUL ROSENTHAL

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions, this month we spoke to Paul Rosenthal, Sales Director at Amthal Fire & Security.

Q1 Q2

Q3

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Trainee electronic engineer for Marconi Instruments.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

Through the power of networking! We knew we had the capability as a company to support facilities management through the tough economic climate and so we put together a specialist team and got ourselves known. It’s now one of the biggest growth areas of our company.

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

I have to give this one to Ashley Humphries, Managing Director at Hills Motor Group. I have a huge amount of respect for his achievements as someone who has really kept his team together and looked after the company single- handed. I absolutely take my hat off to him and often let him know that I have no idea how he does it.

Q4

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR

WOULD YOU BUY?

Easy – an Audi R8 v10 convertible in electric blue – not that I have thought about this at all...

Q5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

INDUSTRY? I think this one comes down to technology.

In such a fast-paced,

evolving world, facilities management can benefit massively from investment in the latest smart technologies

my team (Spurs) and relive so many Cup wins. He would be joined by Thomas Edison who I truly admire for never being defeated or giving up in his ambition and dream as an inventor and businessman. Finally, I would have to invite Lynda Carter, who was my first true love.

Q9

to save on time and resource. I think there needs to be a focus on understanding its true impact.

Q6 Q7

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO

BE WHEN YOU WERE

GROWING UP? My uncle was a police officer and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps and specialise in firearms.

IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPERPOWER FOR

A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE

AND WHY? I recently experienced being Batman for a day for a charity event, so I would love the chance to fly like Superman and be anywhere instantly and see what’s going on before it happened so I could save the world, time and again.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER

PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE

AND WHY? My first would have to be the legend that is Bill Nicholson. I’d love to chat about his experiences of managing

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE

FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? Again, I really think this links back to the opportunities that come with smart technology, which is massively changing the industry. I think it’s already happening with real time reporting, control and feedback, but the future will bring a chance for FM’s to see what’s happening and receive information before an issue occurs.

Q10

GARY BARBOUR, DIRECTOR,

AUTONOMOUS FM: HOW DOES THE FM MARKET ATTRACT NEW TALENT INTO A FUTURE THAT WILL BE DATA LED AND HOW WILL THE TRANSFORMATION INTO DATA DRIVEN SOLUTIONS BE VIEWED BY THE EXISTING

FACILITIES MANAGERS? I think this is very similar to the fire and security industry, where we’ve had to look at different, ‘non traditional’ sources to recruit (and retain) the right talent. We have to look beyond just having the capability to do the job, but also attracting personnel with skillsets that include having a grasp of latest technologies and understanding how they integrate into the FM market.
