Hello and welcome to the December issue of Tomorrow’s FM.
This year, the labour shortage has played on the minds of almost everyone in the industry. The leisure, retail and hospitality sectors have probably been hit the hardest and the issue isn’t going to be resolved anytime soon. As Stefano Bensi, General Manager at SoftBank Robotics EMEA, points out in his feature for this month Leisure & Retail feature, “data from the Office of National Statistics revealed that 37% of businesses operating in the accommodation and food industries are experiencing skilled labour shortages significantly higher than in other large sectors, such as construction, transport and real estate.”

From lingering issues with Covid-19 shutting large parts of the leisure industry, to fewer EU workers, higher energy costs and rising inflation, the staffing crisis has had a detrimental impact on the quality of service these sectors can offer. You can see what Softbank’s potential solutions to this are on page 40, but in short it involves a complete digital revolution and bringing cobots right to the forefront of FM.
We also shine a light on CAFM & IT, one of our most popular features throughout the year. Elecosoft examines whether a preventative or corrective approach to maintenance is more suitable for your company, whilst Protex AI evaluates the promise of a new era for technology – one that is shaped by artificial intelligence.
This issue also sees Hotels & Hospitality and Design & Interiors in focus, as well as all of our regular features. On behalf of the Tomorrow’s FM team, we wish all our readers a relaxing and well-deserved Christmas break, and a very happy New Year.
See you in January.
