Besides generating social media posts and attracting free publicity, impressive washrooms can also have a significant impact on the customer’s perception of a hotel, bar or restaurant. Around 90% of respondents in an Essity survey claimed the washrooms played an important role in their overall impression of a hospitality facility, with 67% adding that an attractively-designed washroom made their hotel or restaurant experience more pleasant.


However, impressive surroundings should never be delivered at the expense of essentials such as cleanliness and hygiene - and our research confirmed this.


Around 80% of study respondents said they believed a dirty restaurant washroom to be a likely reflection on standards in the kitchen. More than 75% said they would not return to a restaurant that had a dirty washroom - and 25% said they would actually walk out of a venue if the washroom failed to meet their cleanliness standards.


So, all those weird, wonderful and wacky washroom should also offer high standards of cleaning and hygiene to ensure that their customers feel happy and safe. And dispensers should be easy to clean, quick to refill, intuitive to use and offer a high capacity to prevent paper and soap from running out between maintenance checks.


However, aesthetics and functionality can go hand in hand and there is no reason why a practical, hygienic washroom unit cannot also be smart and attractive.

Talking point toilets can have their downsides. Disco buttons, hologram images and wacky decors will slow up washroom traffic in large, busy venues because people will be tempted to linger for longer and take photos. But such gimmicks can help to put smaller bars and cafes on the map and attract new custom from curious punters keen to find out what the fuss is about.


However at the end of the day, it is more important that hospitality washrooms should be clean, hygienic, sustainable, user-friendly and efficiently run. And these qualities in themselves should be something people want to talk about.
