Waste Saving Audit by phs Wastekit
About this Product/Service
phs Wastekit surveyed key FM decision makers in retail, hospitality and food manufacturing, revealing a fascinating insight into these sectors’ waste management habits and the future of sustainability in these industries.
The survey revealed that FM decision needed a better understanding of the revenue opportunities of their waste cardboard. One in ten of those surveyed did not know that they can make money from their business’ waste cardboard.

As well as highlighting the opportunities many FMs in these sectors are missing via cardboard rebates from waste collectors, the survey showed that younger decision makers were less likely to take up any rebates they were aware of. A third of businesses where the decision maker is age 34-45 did not receive any rebates for either cardboard or plastic recycling.
“It’s a surprising statistic,” said Jason Smith, Managing Director of phs Wastekit, which is a provider of balers and compactor machines. “We would expect the younger generation of FMs to be more open and aware of these opportunities. Not only does it generate extra income and save costs, but recycling plays an important part in CSR and carbon reduction strategies too.

54 AWARDS 2024
The survey highlighted the differences between the sectors. The hospitality industry was the least engaged with 41% of the businesses surveyed not using a baler or compactor. Retailers also showed less engagement than expected with 20% not using a baler or compactor. Food manufacturers showed the highest engagement with 96% using a compactor and 92% using a baler to manage their waste.
“Using a baler or compactor machine significantly reduces the volume of waste you are dealing with” said Jason. “This means reduced disposal and transport costs. Using a baler also gives you the opportunity to sell your waste cardboard to recycling companies in bales. It’s a simple process that brings in extra revenue – crucial at a time of spiralling costs.”
