Hello and welcome to the August issue of Tomorrow’s FM.

In his article for this month’s Design & Interiors feature, David Bricknell, MD at Dale Office Interiors, looks at the relationship between facilities management and human resources. This of course, is not a new topic area in these pages. Since the findings of The Stoddart Review called for a chief workplace officer to act as a super connector between different corporate departments, we have explored the various ways in which this could work.

Bricknell’s core focus is on how working practices and habits are evolving, with flexible and agile working becoming more commonplace. This has been exacerbated even further by the coronavirus-related lockdown. To meet the needs of these evolving practices, FM should turn to HR to properly understand the workforce for which they’re designing an office space for. If both work side by side, an organisation stands a much better chance of strengthening the workplace for employees, than it would have without such consultation.

In our FM & Technology feature, Buro Happold explores the role of data in supporting FMs to manage the current challenges stemming from the coronavirus crisis and prepare for a post-pandemic future, whilst Skybox Security investigates the rise of cyberattacks on the UK’s electrical grid and suggests ways energy companies can protect their critical assets. Elsewhere, Jan-Hein Hemke shares his thoughts on lockdown and discusses what the future could look like if we embrace fresh ways of living and working.

With the retail industry reopening their doors at the start of July, we caught up with Kirsty Shearer, Development Director at Agilité Solutions, to talk about how shops can reinvent themselves for the future of the high street, for the Leisure & Retail feature.

Enjoy the read.
