TRAINING & EDUCATION SPONSORED BY: ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION
For businesses looking to gain that extra advantage in a competitive market, continuous professional development is essential. Just as important is the choice of provider, to ensure the most successful
outcomes. Delia Cannings, Founder of Environmental Excellence Education, tells us how her purpose- build centre is shaping the next generation of cleaning operatives, supervisors and managers.
Sitting on the western edge of Birmingham, just a few hundred yards from J2 of the M5 sits one of the cleaning industries most innovative and unique training centres. Founder, owner and Chief Executive, Delia Cannings refers to the centre as the “embodiment of her life’s work” and her enthusiasm and passion can be found in every corner of the purpose built facility.
Environmental Excellence Training and Development Ltd provides accredited and tailored courses from entry to degree level for cleaning operations across the sector. Executive director Delia Cannings brings over 30 years’ knowledge and experience of cleaning science, health, hygiene and safety matters. She now shares this expertise alongside her professional team, meeting all training and education requirements either on site or at their state-of-the-art training suite in Birmingham.
She says: “Development of the workforce is key to a successful business. Lifelong learning, widening participation and succession planning are fundamental features in supporting ongoing success. Employers who want to develop their workforce should consider a number of factors when selecting a training provider. New Government initiatives such as trailblazers and the apprenticeship levy will impact on the next generation of learners. Selecting ROTO registered providers is crucial. ROTO is the approved register of training providers and should be part of the criteria when selecting a provider. Information can be found at

THE TRAINING ENVIRONMENT This is one of the most crucial things to get right if you are going to get the best
out of your training investment. Says Delia: “An area which has been well thought out and designed accordingly will enhance, promote and support success. An environment which embraces new technologies, enabling learners to respond with knowledge to the emerging trends, and provides settings which replicate those you will find in industry will contribute in a meaningful way to the learner journey. Areas for practical learning must be large enough for novice operators using mechanical equipment safely. Storage and disposal areas must be safe; resources must be in good working order. Theory should be delivered by experienced practitioners in an environment free from potential barriers to learning.
A serious focus on environmental best practice values, use of reputable cleaning products, modern manual and mechanical equipment; wrapped up in infection prevention will encourage success. Room layout, comfort and visibility is crucial, colour schemes must be vibrant and welcoming.
LEARNING MATERIALS A comprehensive up to date library of learning materials along with professionally prepared handouts is absolutely vital to reinforce the learning message. Materials should be language appropriate and pictorial where required. Access to current COSHH assessments, risk assessments, standard operating procedures, and machinery operating instructions demonstrates Health & Safety compliance. Environmental Excellence, recently acquired education partner Cresta Books, publishing the widest range of cleaning training guides and books in the UK, available direct from the online bookshop at

The result of embracing these simple steps is the perfect training environment which will have a significant impact on the learners and promote success.
ACCREDITATION Environmental Excellence Education’s portfolio of opportunities is accredited through several awarding bodies and universities.
“We are delighted to have recently solidified our position in the training arena, having been selected as one of only two associate providers nationally recognised for the provision of BICSc courses,” says Delia. “Added to this we are now registered with ROTO (The Register of Training Providers).”
In addition to the training provision, this proactive professional team now provides external auditing, contract review bid writing services and specialist cleaning services to many clients.
Delia says: “The success we are enjoying in this area is based on engagement of key industry professionals which has enabled the harnessing and transfer of vast experience and knowledge from across the service sector into our offering.
