The relationship between big businesses and smaller SMEs is much like a natural
ecosystem, according to Ceris Burns, Founder of Ceris Burns International. Each type of business has a part to play in overall success.
When we think about the business world, it’s normally the huge, multi- national brands that come to mind. They are the ones we always hear about during any major economic event – good or bad.
However, according to government statistics, in 2016 there were 5.3 million small or medium sized businesses (SMEs) – each employing 0-249 people – that’s over 99% of all businesses in the UK.
To be successful, each type and size of business is dependent on the other; as suppliers and customers. The relationship is very much like a natural ecosystem. Big companies are the impressive trees, literally with branches spread wide, and SMEs are the air around them, both contributing to and benefiting from the thriving environment through interactions akin to photosynthesis.
The big companies have deep roots and are usually resilient to challenges. This offers stability and economies of scale among other advantages. The downside can be a reliance on systems and processes, which may consequently make it harder to make exceptions and adapt. In contrast, part of the reason for SME’s success is their versatility and adaptability to changing customer demands, economic situations and world events, but this comes without the support of their own deep roots, to help weather any storms.
