Building in sustainability Here, Diversey discuss how to embed sustainability into your cleaning operations.

Sustainability is now firmly established as one of the biggest social, economic and political issues of our times. High profile campaigners have helped to raise awareness and drive demand for action.

None of this has happened overnight: issues surrounding sustainability have come a long way in a generation. Less than 20 years ago, sustainability was for many a vague outline of something that today is clearly front of mind with businesses across the globe. Rising temperatures, polluted air, plastic waste in oceans, more extreme weather, resource scarcity, population growth, and many other issues are tell- tale signs of a looming crisis.

When Diversey published its 15th and latest annual Sustainability Report earlier this year, Chief Executive Officer Mark Burgess said: "At Diversey, we take these issues seriously. What’s more, we believe that sustainability makes good business sense. We embrace the view that at its core sustainability equates to the deliberate, ongoing reduction of waste. Purging waste from our operations and our customers’ is a top priority, one we pursue deliberately, every day."

Environmental stewardship is deeply embedded in Diversey’s culture and is one of its core values. In addition to its market-leading ultra-concentrated products and controlled dosing systems that minimise waste, it has been offering eco-labelled products for over 20 years. It was the first commercial cleaning product supplier to sign the voluntary, independently certified AISE Charter for Sustainable Cleaning. In 2008 the company was the first in the cleaning industry to join the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers programme.

A quick and simple way to improve the sustainability of almost any cleaning operation is through adoption of ultra-concentrates. Diversey offers these across a wide range of applications so that cleaning teams can quickly, easily and economically prepare solutions for equipment such as spray and toilet bottles, sinks, buckets or cleaning

machines. The result is safe, simple and consistent high- performance cleaning while minimising wastage, packaging and chemical miles.

One of the main reasons ultra concentrates deliver reduced cost in use is that solutions are prepared at the optimum dilution for superior and consistent performance. This reduces the need for repeat cleaning which cuts wasted time, delivering an immediate productivity and efficiency gain.

Considering the product contributes far less to the overall cost than the person doing the cleaning it makes sense to use products that maximise performance and productivity. Ultra concentrates also reduce the amount of product wastage because, unlike old-fashioned ‘pour-and-glug’, there is no guesswork involved in preparing solutions. Costs are reduced and predictable.

Ultra-concentrates use less packaging than comparable bulk or ready-to-use products because water is added at the point of use rather than the place of manufacture. A business using 100 cases of six 750ml single-use spray bottles could reduce plastic waste by up to 125.6kg (99.6% reduction) and up to 26.6kg less cardboard (98.9% reduction) by switching to Diversey’s ultra concentrates and re-usable bottles. Changes like these also reduce supply chain burdens because fewer cases need to be bought, transported and stored to support any given operation. Transportation costs can be up to 20 times less and warehouse and on-site storage requirements up to 22 times lower.

Diversey already offers many of its ranges in ultra- concentrate formats, and it continues to develop new products. This can be more complex than simply producing concentrated versions of existing formulations. They must go through regulatory checks and also be tested for efficacy, stability, consistency and other factors that make them suitable for real-world applications.

Although its products already fulfil demanding sustainability criteria, Diversey recognises there are times when customers want to demonstrate the very highest levels of environmental responsibility. The company’s SURE range, for example, is an innovative selection of plant-based, 100% biodegradable cleaning products.

The 18 products in the SURE range cover all routine and daily cleaning requirements in kitchens and washrooms including personal care. Each has been formulated to deliver superior professional results while maximising safety and gentleness for people and the environment. They meet typical eco-certification criteria and, where applicable, are all EU Ecolabel certified or have approval pending.
