Water: Our most precious resource
John Brill, Sales Director for Nilfisk UK, examines the findings of the 2030 Water Resource Group and reflects on water usage in the commercial cleaning sector. Is the industry doing enough?
The 2030 Water Resource Group was formed in 2008 to contribute new insights into the increasingly critical issue of global water resource scarcity. The project is managed by McKinsey & Company, and the Group consists of expert advisors and a range of private and social organisations including the global food group Barilla, Coca-Cola and Nestlé.
The increasing demand for water from the world’s growing population, combined with the impact of climate change, has already made water a scarcity in many parts of the world. The Group’s findings to date confirm that in just 20 years’ time, the overall demand for water will be 40% higher than today and more than 50% higher in economically developing countries.
To date there has not been a vigorous framework to facilitate decision making and investment in the water
supply sector. The recent report, however, provides a toolkit that stakeholders can use to compare the impact, cost and achievability of a range of different measures and technologies. It’s a fact base to underpin solutions – but is anyone taking any notice?
Is the earth running out of water?
The report confirms that despite the depletion of watercourses, glaciers, and aquifers in many regions, the Earth is in fact not running out of water. Most countries have more than enough water to supply their populations’ growing needs and to sustain the flows needed to protect the natural environment. The problem is that globally we are not managing water resources effectively: we are simply being too wasteful.
