Making sustainable choices in the washroom


Trudi Osborne, Marketing Manager at Airdri, suggests that providing the eco-friendliest hand drying solutions can help your business, and your washroom users, do their bit towards protecting our planet.


The washroom environment faces multiple eco challenges, from the overuse of water, paper towel wastage, and the energy consumption of hand dryers. Finding a solution that is both sustainable and effective can be complex.


However, this doesn’t mean that sustainability shouldn’t be high on the wish list when it comes to procurement. There are solutions on the market that tick all the boxes – from effectiveness to efficiency.


Paper towels vs. hand dryers


There has long been a battle between the paper towel and hand dryer industry for the hygiene top spot. But when it comes to considering which method has the least impact on the environment, it seems jet dyers win the race.


When you look at the green credentials of paper towels, it’s clear to see why they are deemed a less sustainable option. Whilst paper towels do not require energy to deliver an effective dry, we must consider the efficiency of the manufacturing process, the high levels of waste when people dispense more than necessary, and the need for constant replenishment.


We should also consider the materials they are composed of and where they end up after use. The process of converting trees into the end product comes with a high cost to our planet’s forests and the emissions created during shipping, and those released when a paper towel decomposes in landfill, are concerning.


Of course, a hand dryer requires energy to power it, but the manufacturing process and longevity of the product deliver far superior eco-results. When it comes to looking for a sustainable hand drying solution, look for hand dryers that minimise the environmental impact through very low energy consumption and long lifecycles, keeping landfill to a minimum.


Low energy consumption


Investing in a hand dryer that will go the distance, as well as keeping energy running costs to a minimum, is key.
