Dropping the mopping

The Preparation Group discusses how a Scrubber Dryer and Diamond Floor Pad cleans and maintains hard floors and LVT and vinyl, all without a chemical in sight.

To get the maximum life out of floors and to keep them in good condition, hygienic and safe, they need to be cleaned through a regular maintenance program.

While textile floor coverings are generally vacuumed, most other hard polished surfaces, wood and resilient floors have traditionally been manually mopped with cleaning solution. The disadvantage of mopping is that it uses chemicals, and too much solution – or poor rinsing – can create a slippery surface. Chemicals with a low or high alkaline pH value on the wrong floor will also cause irrevocable damage.

Diamond Floor Pads offer eco-friendly and cost-effective deep restorative cleaning. Designed to be used with just water, they are washable and reusable, providing a more sustainable choice. Fitted to an STG machine, Burnisher or conventional Rotary or Scrubber Dryer, they clean and polish floors at the same time and avoid the potential build- up of floor chemicals.

Heavily trafficked and worn stone, concrete, marble, terrazzo and epoxy resin floors that have become scratched, stained and contaminated can also easily be transformed with Diamond Pads – which is not so easy to do with a mop.

There is a misconception that Diamond Floor Pads are too aggressive and may damage Vinyl or LVT. The Preparation Group’s Storm Diamond Pads come in a range of different grades from coarse to fine and like any pad or disc, the key is to select the correct grade for the floor. Smooth, non-

textured vinyl and LVT are effectively cleaned using the company’s 1500 (fine cleaning) or 3000 (very fine cleaning) grades only.

Diamond Cleaning Pads come in a range of sizes to fit a variety of machine widths and can leave a soft sheen or high gloss finish depending on the grades selected. They are very simple to use. The first step is to ensure that the designated area is swept clean and that any loose contaminants – e.g. dust, sand or gravel – has been removed to avoid damage to the pad and floor. The pad is then fitted to the machine, in most cases it is simply placed under it with no tools required, the weight of the machine holding it in place.

The pads can be used ‘wet’ or ‘dry’. With the application of water, the floor can be cleaned quicker, the pad will last longer and an enhanced shine can be achieved. For cleaning Vinyl, LVT and Linoleum the pads must be used wet. Another eco-friendly credential is that polishing the floor at the same time as cleaning, means that there is no need to recoat it with environmentally unsound waxes or polishes.

When the machine is in action, the rotating operation, pad pressure and speed will affect the cleaning and polishing process. If washed and stored correctly, Diamond Floor Pads will clean thousands of square metres of surfaces. Storm Diamond Pads are double-sided, so have up to a 60,000m2 life expectancy.
