“Thanks to the digital revolution, the days of taking time out of working hours to learn are over.”
Don’t overlook training in a pandemic
Training is vital in the cleaning sector, enabling operatives to perform their duties safely without risking their own, or others’, health. Jangro CEO, Joanne Gilliard, explains how COVID-19 needn’t prevent workers from developing their skills.
We have felt the effects of COVID-19 in almost every aspect of daily life. Plans have been disrupted on a global scale, from cancelled events and holidays to a sharp increase in working from home.
For the cleaning industry, however, working from home has not been an option, especially for the operatives who have been on the frontline throughout the pandemic. As keyworkers, they have continued to ensure facilities have been hygienically clean and are integral to keeping these spaces COVID-secure going forwards.
Cleaning operatives, and the services they provide, have been recognised as being vital, after years of having been largely held in low regard. Their ability to maintain healthy and hygienic spaces is a critical line of defence in the fight against coronavirus, particularly in the current climate as schools, pubs, restaurants, leisure facilities and more are open for business.
Doing the job right
Cleaning is much more than just grabbing a mop or giving surfaces a quick wipe down. Actually, it can often be a hazardous role, with exposure to harmful chemicals or handling sharps, for example. Training is therefore crucial. In fact, ensuring operatives are well-trained has several benefits.
Firstly, it helps to ensure the operatives’ health and safety – and that of others. Secondly, by investing in training you are placing value on the work undertaken. In a world that has traditionally given little respect to cleaning operatives, this can help boost both morale and productivity. Finally, it ensures the job is performed to a high standard, which not only protects against infection, but can also help a business retain or win new contracts.
Furthermore, there are many non-domestic workers who now find themselves responsible for cleaning, such as teachers, who now have to clean surfaces during the school day. These workers must be provided with

support and guidance so that their cleaning is performed effectively and safely.
But as social distancing becomes the norm, it just isn’t practical (or safe) for operatives or non-domestic workers to attend training courses, which traditionally crowd people in one room in front of a PowerPoint presentation. In fact, this outdated mode of training has been on its way out for quite some time now.
Even pre-pandemic, when people could freely socialise and gather, it was not a favourable way of learning due to time and resource constraints. For example, there are high associated costs, such as travel expenses, the price of the courses themselves, not to mention the cost of lost work if they take place during working hours (which is often the case).
A flexible, contactless solution
Thanks to the digital revolution, the days of taking time out of working hours to learn, classroom style in a training centre from an instructor, are over. At Jangro we offer a free e-learning system, called the Jangro Learning Management Solution (LMS), which has been accredited by the CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Certification Service and is accessible to all of our customers and their employees.
It covers a wide range of topics, with varying course lengths, and users are able to train remotely at times that suit them. This allows cleaning operatives to dip in and out of short or longer sessions, making learning highly flexible and accessible. It's also perfect for those non-domestic workers that have been thrown in the deep end with little knowledge or training on how to clean effectively.
Cleaning operatives are playing a hugely important role to maintain clean and hygienic spaces for others to enjoy. Let’s ensure that COVID-19 doesn’t stop them from receiving the training they deserve, to keep them safe and healthy too.
