10 Questions with... Colin Gilks

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Colin Gilks, UK Sales Manager at Cleantec Innovation.

1 2 3

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I worked in the photographic darkroom of an advertising

agency. It’s a long while ago and I suspect that job no longer exists anymore as it was before the digital age.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? A chance phone call from a former colleague who asked

if I would consider selling floor cleaning machines. It made good sense so here I am after 12 years.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Easy-going, Independent, Loyal. 4

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

Vietnam, my son lives there and it’s so beautiful and vibrant. 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

Greater professional respect for the people at the coalface (cleaners) and better training of salespeople, as they are the image of the industry everyone meets.

6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Listen, learn carefully, but always think independently and make your own decisions. If in sales, find your own style and what works for you.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

Make sure the children are well looked after in life, and then grow old disgracefully.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Josef Stalin: no one can be that evil; he must have an amusing side. Winston Churchill: anyone who likes fine champagne and cigars must be great company. And Sophia Loren: great beauty, charm, elegance, class, intelligence, and we have history.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

There will always be cleaning. The future is innovation and ever-higher standards. Bearing in mind the current situation, the opportunity is there to raise the bar and the industry’s profile.

Mark Dennis, Managing Director at MAG Group, asks: 10

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE A WEEK WITHOUT INTERNET, MOBILE PHONE OR SOCIAL MEDIA,

HOW WILL YOU KEEP YOURSELF BUSY? Treat your job as if you own the business and you are responsible for its success or failure, no one else.
