improve ever since. QA recently swapped out all throwaway cups and replaced them with environmentally-friendly recyclable cups. This will remove half a million single-use cups across the organisation this year.
QA then looked at napkins. Until now cost was the main driver, meaning the organisation typically looked for the cheapest solution. However, this meant that learners were often taking three or four napkins for a single use, and that QA’s waste output was ever-increasing. The napkins were just sitting on surfaces, which looked messy, was not hygienic and encouraged the overuse through availability. In addition, as QA were buying online, the organisation had no real idea of the lifecycle of these products and, more importantly, no real view of the environmental impact.
Guy said: “We set about researching alternative napkin sources, focusing on the environmental angle. Katrin products came to our attention from something I saw on Twitter, and we made contact with Metsä Tissue and the Katrin Team. We were extremely impressed with the environmental ethos.”
Think right and smart with Easy1
Having convinced themselves that Metsä Tissue was absolutely committed to promoting sustainable operations and to conducting its business in a responsible way, QA looked at the napkin product range, and particularly liked the Katrin tabletop napkins.
Guy commented: “The Easy1 Tabletop dispenser looks really smart and promotes an air of professional quality and care. As a value-add, the transparent panels give us a platform to promote marketing messages, course information and our environmental commitments.

“Our latest messaging is a lovely pun on the Grease musical song, cleaning up spills and improving skills which works really well.”
With an average of 10 dispensers in each of the 20 locations, the messaging is highly visible. QA now purchase the Katrin Plus Resta Tabletop Napkins to go into the dispensers. These are 100% virgin fibre, making them softer and more absorbent and because they ‘self-present’, learners will only take one instead of three or four, so less are required and less enter our waste streams.
Guy added: “And on Mesta’s recommendation, we are looking to recycle them in a plant that produces biofuel, so they will be recycled.”
The Katrin Tabletop Napkin Dispenser is enclosed to protect the napkins from spills. It can be moved around and dispenses napkins, touch-free, one at a time. Two types of napkins, both 2-ply, are available – either 100% recycled or 100% virgin fibre. Both have an environmental Eco Label as proof of their sustainability. The products are suitable for any high-traffic locations from education centres, healthcare facilities and petrol stations through to hotels or restaurants – anywhere spills may occur.
Guy concluded: “We are extremely pleased with the new napkins. The professional impact has been strong and Katrin’s ‘less is more’ theme is very much in line with our own environmental approach to consumables. Metsä has been added to our list of trusted partners and we looking to apply the ‘less is more’ approach to all other elements of our purchasing."
