However, the conversion of PAS 250 to a full British standard does not mean that existing PAS 250 compliant podiums are now obsolete.

“When something isn’t

broken, it doesn’t mean it can’t be improved upon.”

The Chairman of PASMA’s technical committee, Dougie McCombie, said: “You can continue to use your existing PAS 250-type approved podiums and there is no necessity to change them immediately. However, when you need to buy additional podiums or replace ones that are worn out or damaged, then you should upgrade to products certified as compliant with BS 8620.

“BS 8620 certified compliant products are available, and we encourage users to update their procurement policies accordingly to guarantee that they are purchasing equipment that meets the very latest criteria for strength, access, stability and rigidity.”

To assist purchasers and users over this transitional period, PASMA has introduced an informative fact sheet and FAQ section on its website.

BSI’s Publishing Manager for built environment, James Wilson, commented: “BSI acknowledges the work that PASMA and other stakeholders have completed towards the conversion of PAS 250 to a full British standard. Its publication should ensure wider recognition of the product standard for low level platforms.”

In addition to products being required to meet the standard, the Work at Height Regulations also require users and those responsible for working at height to be competent to do so. Successfully completing PASMA’s Low Level Access Course, and gaining a PASMA card and certificate, is a way to demonstrate that competence. The course, which gives an overview of regulations, legislation and product standards, and covers current best practice, inspection and hazards to be avoided - is available through a network of approved and audited training centres nationwide.
