THERE’S NO PEOPLE LIKE SHOW PEOPLE...

Paul Thrupp shines a spotlight on some of the BCC members and partners who’ll be lighting up the Manchester Cleaning Show next month.

It’s only a few weeks now until the Manchester Cleaning Show and I for one can’t wait. One reason is that with my Federation of Window Cleaners’ (FWC) hat on, I get to play a central role in all the drama and fun which results from the annual Window Cleaning Challenge.

For those who aren’t familiar with the event, the idea is very simple: who can clean three 1.143m high windows and the sill, in the fastest possible time, leaving no smears?

The fastest times of each day will see two lucky entrants earn a prize of £250 a piece, and if you fancy a crack at the official Guinness World Record then the time to beat is an astonishing 9.14 seconds, set in 2009 in Blackpool, by our good friend Terry ‘Turbo’ Burrows.

Terry will be supporting us again in Manchester, and if you want to see him in action then a quick search on YouTube should bring up some clips. I would urge all you ‘shiners’ and budding window cleaners to register to take part in the challenge by going to the website and clicking on the ‘Visiting’ button.

On an education point, the FWC will be presenting a session at the show about the need for robust risk assessments and safe systems of work to make window cleaning safer. This will be just one of a series of

24 | REGULAR

sessions all about health and safety within cleaning, which regular readers of this column will know is a subject very close to my heart.

The FWC is also one of several British Cleaning Council (BCC) members who’ll be in Manchester in April. Sharing the BCC’s stand (C40) will be the Domestic Cleaning Alliance (DCA), The British Toilet Association (BTA), The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers’ Association (CHSA), WAMITAB, the Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals (AHCP) and The Association of Building Cleaning Service Providers (ABCD).

During the show, the ABCD will also be announcing their public sector ‘Cleaning Team of the Year Award’, which is sponsored by Denis Rawlins Ltd.

Other BCC members who will have dedicated stands at the show include the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc, stand A06) and the British Pest Control Association (BPCA, stand G03), while representatives of the British Association of Cleaning in Higher Education (BACHE) and the Cleaning and Support Services Association (CSSA) will be giving presentations.

So, if you want to find out more about what these BCC member associations actually do, and how they benefit the wider cleaning sector, then please do make sure you seek

them out and say hello. They are a friendly bunch (mostly).

Talking of BCC members, I was also recently delighted to be invited to Keep Britain Tidy’s national conference and awards ceremony in Brighton where the BCC was an award sponsor.

We supported the Outstanding Service Delivery award, which was deservedly won by Doncaster Council, and it was fantastic to see so many different organisations and partners get together to highlight the need to create, maintain and cherish a clean and safe environment, both natural and built, for the good of everyone.

Finally, on the theme of collaboration, it’s great that The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) will be joining us this year in Manchester (stand A13).

Increasingly the FM and cleaning sectors are facing similar challenges across a number of common issues, and any opportunity to exchange ideas, explore solutions and work more closely together has to be warmly welcomed.

And if you’re coming to Manchester in April, we’d love to get you involved in the conversation as well.
