Refreshing washrooms

Here, SC Johnson Professional discuss the next step in their innovative foam soap range.

Deb Skin Care (an established SC Johnson Professional brand) know a thing or two about foam technology, having pioneered its development in 1999, and are bringing their expertise to the modern washroom with their new foam soap range.

Around 20 years ago, bulk fill was widely used in washrooms, which came with hygiene and maintenance issues. Deb revolutionised the market with hygienically- sealed cartridges which were easier to maintain – tailoring the dispenser system around the foam soap technology. The innovations brought a new format focusing on users, aesthetics and cost benefits.

With their new refreshed foam soap range, SC Johnson Professional bring to market a range that understands the modern washroom and users, appropriate for all facilities from high footfall functional to luxury. With a solution for the professional world, the range brings modern signature fragrances, quality and aesthetics that delight users in facilities of all sizes.


To bring pleasant fragrances with broad appeal to the washroom, SC Johnson Professional commissioned extensive research with the leading fragrance house behind Glade’s fragrances. Based on user insights, new signature fragrances including Azure and Rose were curated.

These were tested and proven to deliver a high level of liking for many washroom users and were developed to avoid unpleasant synthetic or chemical scents. The result is modern fragrances that deliver clean, fresh and simple scents to delight all washroom users.

Kind to skin

In order to be universally suitable for users, the soaps needed to be mild and kind to skin. They needed to be as gentle as possible, especially for washrooms in offices where users would use the product repeatedly, each and every day.

The EC Cosmetic Product Regulation states that products wishing to claim to be hypoallergenic must not contain known sensitisers or allergens, and that there must be evidence that the product poses the lowest possible risk of sensitisation. Following a review of the raw materials and usage exposure scenarios, an independent toxicologist risk

assessment certified that the foam soaps were formulated to pose the lowest potential risk, and can therefore be considered hypoallergenic.

To be sure that the soaps were as mild as possible, SC Johnson Professional went one step further by commissioning more extensive patch testing. The company carried out extensive skin testing of the fragrance-free soap on 200 users of both ‘normal’ and ‘sensitive’ skin type groups in order to ensure the product could be classified as skin hypoallergenic. This testing was also applied to the fragranced soaps, despite their ineligibility to be certified ‘skin hypoallergenic’ – the experts took care to ensure all products were thoroughly tested.

99% removal

Another key aspect of the refreshed range is the ability to wash away over 99% of germs and dirt. SC Johnson Professional use their simple, innovative formula to provide an easy solution across all foam soaps; just one shot applied for 30 seconds will wash away over 99% of all contamination on the skin.

An independent test on skin contaminated with E. coli, which was then washed with the soaps, was conducted to prove the removal efficacy of the product. A controlled wash test using light soiling was also carried out to exemplify the dirt removal ability.

The benefits of the washroom foam soap range include requiring 36% less product and 45% less water, whilst ensuring 30% more handwashes per litre of soap and producing 26% less packaging waste.

Encouraging hand hygiene is essential, especially in offices or schools and during the winter months when colds, flu and norovirus can cause illness and lead to high levels of absenteeism. With a fresh, clean washroom where users like and trust the products and dispensers supplied, thorough handwashing and hand hygiene compliance is maximised, thus helping to control and hopefully minimise the spread of infection.
