Cleaning and hygiene standards within the food and drink industry, including the operating conditions for the processing machinery, are extremely multifaceted and demanding.


Companies must adhere to the strictest hygiene and cleanliness criteria to be HACCP compliant, while cleaning and sanitising in ‘dry’ environments and other ambient food production areas all carry their own different risk factors. For example, a warm, dry production plant provides an ideal breeding ground for insects such as moths and beetles.


Historically these environments, including production lines and conveyor belts, have been cleaned using aggressive cleaning products plus a lot of manual effort, as most water-based systems cause more problems than they solve. It may be somewhat surprising then that a water-based technology has been proven to be the ideal tool within these environments.


Dry steam technology has been proven to not only eradicate product residue but it also removes the biofilm of allergens, pathogens and any other contaminants – and all without the use of any harsh chemical substances.


Dry steam technology is a highly efficient and cost-effective means of achieving high standards of sanitation. Supplied as a mobile unit or housed within a stationary cabinet, it’s a versatile solution which enables equipment and machinery to be deep-cleaned in situ, thus offering increased performance and reduced downtime during product changeovers.


When used in conjunction with a Belt Sanitation Unit (BSU), dry steam can also be used on any type of production line/ conveyor belt with no risk of surface damage, nor any risk to electrical or electronic components.


Osprey Deep Clean has been providing steam cleaning solutions for over 20 years (including more than 12 in the food industry). Working directly with a range of food producers, from high care and low care to ambient dried food producers, they have tried and tested dry steam as the ultimate cleaning and sanitation tool.


To some, the term ‘dry steam’ may sound like a contradiction as steam is a by-product of water and therefore cannot possibly be dry. Whilst this is true of conventional steam, by applying further heat and super heating to 180°C, any remaining water is vaporised and

the steam becomes ‘dry’. This dry steam is ideal for use in both moist and dry environments alike and gives unrivalled cleaning and sanitation capability.


Minimal tooling is needed in addition to an Osprey mobile steam machine: a simple detail nozzle on the end of the hose enables them to be used for a wide variety of cleaning tasks when not connected to a BSU, making them a truly versatile cleaning unit. Gentle agitation by the operator is all that’s required to remove any additional soiling and break any biofilms. After cleaning, any residual steam and/or soiling that remains on the surfaces is simply wiped away, vacuumed or allowed to fall onto the floor for removal by another method.


The use of dry steam as a tool for cleaning has become more commonplace in recent years; however, Osprey Deep Clean has been a pioneer by conducting a scientific study to validate the bactericidal efficacy of dry steam. Their technology was initially tested within hospital environments by the Netherlands-based independent research facility, TNO. These findings were then applied to other market sectors, most notably the food processing and food manufacturing industries.


Osprey also works closely with Campden BRI, who provided the company with validation of their dry steam technology for the positive removal of allergens from surfaces. Dry steam as a cleaning tool is much less aggressive than other more commonly employed sanitation procedures, which in turn means equipment lasts longer and operates more reliably, delivering long term cost savings. Plus, there is no chemical requirement when using dry steam meaning there is no limit as to the materials and surfaces it can be used on.
