Winter wellness

Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager at Northwood Hygiene Products, takes a look at how properly equipped and maintained away-from-home washrooms can combat the spread of germs in winter.

As we enter the depths of winter, the link between the overall wellbeing of end users and away-from-home (AfH) washrooms is a crucial consideration for facilities managers across all sectors including commercial, education, healthcare and services.

It’s well known that in winter months, the spread of infection is particularly high, and it’s well reported that this puts strain on workforces and the NHS. Research has also proved that bacteria is primarily spread through the hands, and without the right hygiene practices this can lead to coughs, sneezes and a variety of illnesses.

Facilities managers should consider the implications of not equipping and maintaining their washrooms with systems that are fit-for-purpose. If end users do not have the right access to a fully functioning washroom dispensing system, they’re at risk of negating the hand washing process and becoming more susceptible to bacterial infection.

The collateral damage across business is profound. Productivity is severely hit when employees need time away from work to recover from illness, and for those who don’t, the spread of infection within the workplace cannot be underestimated.

Common colds are just the start, too. Recently it emerged that influenza-like illness rates have risen to 14.8 cases per 100,000 people, almost double the figure at the end of last year. In addition, an average of 617 beds a day have been closed in UK hospitals because of norovirus and other winter bugs, up from 398 a day in the first week of the year.

So how can we ensure that we play our role in helping to combat colds and flu during the winter months?

Facility managers responsible for the overall upkeep of AfH washrooms have an important part to play in helping to fight against the spread of bacteria. By selecting an attractive, robust and fit-for-purpose complete washroom solution, they have more chance of reducing the potential of end users ignoring the hand washing process.

Of course, we can’t necessarily force washroom users to clean their hands; however, with fully stocked soap and dispensing systems provided in key areas where demand is high, we’re giving ourselves the best possible chances.

That’s where Northwood’s trusted Leonardo Dispensing system can help.
