CREATIVE QUARTER TO HOST BEST IN DESIGN

Running from 22-24 May, Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) returns for its ninth edition. We bring you a preview of what to expect this year.

EXHIBITIONS

CDW’s exhibitions are hosted in distinctive spaces around the area linked by a route running through the centre of EC1. There are seven exhibitions, each with a different curatorial focus, ranging lighting, luxury interiors and the best of British design. One you won’t want to miss is Project.

Clerkenwell, in the London Borough of Islington, is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it truly one of the most important design hubs in the world. To celebrate this rich and diverse community, Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) has created a showcase of leading UK and international brands and companies presented in a series of showroom events, exhibitions and special installations that take place across the area.

Now in its ninth year the award-winning CDW has firmly established itself as the UK’s leading independent design festival and annually attracts the international design community to this small area Islington for three days of exciting events. In 2017, the design community flocked to Clerkenwell with 34,128 attendees and over 300 exhibiting brands.

This year will again play host to hundreds of fringe events, showroom presentations, workshops, talks and public- facing installations all with design at their heart. Events will follow a distinct trail north to south from Spa Fields down to Farringdon linking together several exhibition spaces and a series of specially commissioned installations

CDW PRESENTS

Each year, Clerkenwell Design Week displays new projects and commissioned installations located within high profile spaces across the area. Working with leading names in design, engineering and architecture, these projects aim to bring spectacle and energy to the district whilst pushing the boundaries of design concepts, process and material capabilities. This year, sustainability is a key theme with several participants and projects addressing this trend.

Design Studio Timorous Beasties, renowned for its surreal and provocative textiles and wallpapers, will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of its collaboration with Brintons Carpets. A specially built pavilion in St John’s Square, designed by Mark Shaw of Shaw Architects, will showcase a brand new collection of carpets inspired by nature, unveiled for the first time during CDW.

34 | CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK

Launched in 2016, Project’s first outing was so successful it was extended to cover two linked pavilions for CDW 2017 and will return for 2018. Set in the Garden of St James within the beautiful grounds of Clerkenwell’s parish church, Project brings together a leading selection of contract furniture, lighting and surface brands from around the globe from flooring specialists Amtico to Moventi, who design and manufacture furniture for the workplace.

Venue address: Garden of St James, St James Walk, EC1R 0EA Opening hours: 10:00 – 21:00 every day during Clerkenwell

FRINGE ACTIVITIES

In celebration of Clerkenwell Design Week, a selection of 25 of local architect practices, including Patrick Lewis Architects and McCaul Goldsmiths will throw open their doors to the festival’s visitors and host workshops, displays and installations.

CONVERSATIONS AT CLERKENWELL

In partnership with Mapei, Conversations at Clerkenwell remains an important area to introduce and discuss new products, raise industry issues and network. Design heavyweights Seymour Powell will explore hospitality design, including their work in bringing Chef Heston Blumenthal’s ideas to life in a session called The Magic of Hospitality while Creative specialists, Territory Studio, will take part in a panel discussion entitled Future Cities – the session will include a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s work on visualising the future - be it for films, games, entrepreneurs and with a glimpse into how Clerkenwell may look in 2049.

Talks will be held in a purpose-built pavilion designed by Harper Downey and the full programme will be announced closer to the show. Talks are ticketed at £5.

Clerkenwell Design week is free to attend and you can register via the website.
