F Ball provides a speedy refurbishment with minimum impact on shoppers at Hawkshead retail store.
High-performance smoothing underlayments and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to create a durable, high-quality floor finish during the refurbishment of the 480m2 floor at the flagship Hawkshead Family Outdoor Outfitters store in Hawkshead, Cumbria.
Flooring contractors from St Ann's Warehouse were hired to refurbish the floor by B3 Shopfitting. The team first removed existing carpets and checked that the concrete subfloor was sufficiently dry for work to go ahead. Minor cracks and pockmarks within the concrete were patch repaired using Stopgap 400 Repair, a fast setting, rapid drying compound designed for repairing internal floors. It is suitable for use over a wide range of subfloor types, including sand/cement screeds, concrete, sound asphalt, terrazzo, ceramic tiles and Stopgap waterproof surface membranes.
Once the patch repairs had dried, 3mm of minimum preparation, high-performance levelling compound, Stopgap 1200 Pro, was used to smooth the subfloor. Stopgap 1200 Pro is designed for use directly over old adhesive residues, including bitumen and carpet tile tackifiers, without the need for priming. It is low-odour, self-smoothing and fast-drying. It has a working time of 20 minutes and dries to be walk-on hard after just 60 minutes. Applied at a thickness of 2–5mm, the compound is dry enough to receive floorcoverings from as little as four hours.
Contractors were required to close off and refurbish each room of the busy outdoor activities store separately, while the store was open to the public. In order to create the minimum possible impact on shoppers in Hawkshead, F. Ball's Styccobond F3 ultra low emission flooring adhesive was used to adhere new carpets to the subfloor. the latest flooring technology to keep the quantity of VOC emissions and associated odours to a minimum during and after floorcovering installation.
Styccobond F3 can be used for securing fibre-bonded carpets, hessian, felt, secondary latex and rubber foam backed carpets and cork tiles up to 3.2mm thick. It is compatible with around 70% of the floorcoverings listed in F. Ball's Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), which features over 5,500 adhesive recommendations for floorcoverings, endorsed by over 200 leading floorcovering manufacturers.
Styccobond F3 is available in 15, 5 and 2.5 litre buckets, as well as 1 litre pots, and can be used over a wide range of subfloor types, including Stopgap levelling compounds, structurally sound, smooth, dry subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, plywood, flooring grade chipboard and hardboard. However, it may be necessary to skim some non-absorbent subfloor types with a minimum of 3mm of an appropriate Stopgap levelling compound beforehand.
Mark Chapman, Managing Director at St Ann's Warehouse, said: "We were under pressure to complete the floor refurbishment with as little impact on business in the store as possible, which is why we went straight for F. Ball products. The low emissions from Styccobond F3 were perfect for use in a busy retail environment and Stopgap 400 and 1200 Pro both delivered vital time saving benefits, allowing work to be completed quickly and efficiently. I've used F Ball products for 31 years now and they always offer excellent technical backup."
