RESIDENTIAL FLOORING

SCANDI STYLE, EDWARDIAN SOUL

Havwoods flooring helps transform a traditional North London home into a calm, contemporary family space inspired by Scandinavian simplicity while preserving its original character.

Set within a traditional Edwardian property in North London, this residential project explores the balance between heritage architecture and contemporary Scandinavian design. The client brief was to transform the existing home, rich in original features, into a contemporary and cosy environment. In response, the design retains key period details while introducing a simplified palette and Scandinavian-inspired furniture and fittings. The result is a refined interior where historic character is complemented by a lighter, more modern material language.

While the property retained strong architectural foundations, the interiors no longer aligned with the needs of a young family. Architecture and interior design practice TAK Studio approached the redesign with a focus on creating a calm, practical home that could support everyday living while offering a sense of retreat from the city.

Where possible, original features were retained to honour the property’s history. The existing hallway tiling was carefully preserved, maintaining a sense of arrival rooted in the home’s Edwardian character. Elsewhere, worn floorboards were replaced with engineered timber flooring from Havwoods which is better suited to contemporary living, offering both durability and visual consistency.

Timber surfaces play a central role in shaping the interior of this home. Havwoods’ Alsace Chevron was specified across the kitchen, dining and living areas, while Serres Plank was

introduced in the bedrooms. Both finishes, selected from the Platinum colour group, feature pale, light-reflective tones that enhance natural light and contribute to the home’s calm, Scandinavian aesthetic.

In the main living areas, the chevron pattern introduces a subtle sense of movement, adding texture without interrupting the overall clarity of the space. As light shifts throughout the day, the pattern creates gentle variation across the floor, bringing a quiet sense of rhythm to open-plan areas. In contrast, the wide- format planks used in the bedrooms establish a more restful atmosphere, offering continuity and visual stillness suited to more private spaces.

Throughout the home, the flooring has been kept deliberately simple, acting as a consistent backdrop rather than a focal point. The soft, pale tones of the timber bring warmth to the space without feeling heavy, helping the interiors feel light, open and easy to live in. This approach allows the original features, furniture and day-to-day family life to take centre stage, while maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout.

The completed project demonstrates how thoughtful material selection can bridge architectural eras, bringing together the elegance of Edwardian design with the clarity and simplicity of Scandinavian living.
