COMMERCIAL KITCHENS & FOOD PREP IN THE CAN

Mapei provides a full tiling system for Europe’s largest beverage can manufacturing plant.

A Mapei tiling system has been used to complete an extensive project at Crown Packaging Manufacturing UK Ltd’s can manufacturing, production and distribution facility. Located at Delta Park in Peterborough, the facility spans over 623,000 square feet and is the largest can manufacturing plant in Europe. The project was completed by Floor Form (UK) Ltd for Trebor Developments LLP. The surface specification included monotone and stone-effect porcelain wall and floor tiles, from Solus Ceramics and Johnson Tiles, Mapei floor preparation products, tiling adhesives and grouts.

Designed by AJA Architects, the new bespoke facility is constructed on a 30-acre brownfield site. It includes multiple manufacturing lines which will reach an annual production capacity of more than 3bn units. The tile installation spanned the headquarter office space, conference and training rooms, reception, WCs and changing rooms. The tile specification included designs from Solus Ceramics’ limestone-effect Kingdom and monotone Modular ranges and Johnson Tiles’ unglazed porcelain Kerastar range, totalling an area of approximately 2000m².

During floor preparation, Floor Form (UK) applied Mapeproof One Coat surface damp proof membrane onto newly installed concrete slabs to control residual and constructional moisture. Eco Prim Grip Plus aggregated bonding promoter primer was then applied, followed by Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 fibre-reinforced

smoothing compound which provided SR1 surface flatness prior to the tile installation. Mapetex anti-fracture membrane was also installed to alleviate potential stresses within the substrate.

Tiles were installed using two Mapei tile adhesives: Rapid S1 cement-based rapid setting flexible adhesive and Adesilex P4 self-buttering, quick-setting cementitious adhesive. Ultracolor Plus grout, from Mapei’s Zero Line, was then used to complete the installation. A quick-setting and drying anti-efflorescence cementitious grout, Ultracolor Plus features water-repellent DropEffect and mould-resistant Bioblock technology and has CO2 emissions offset in the entire life cycle.

Eco Prim Grip Plus, Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240, Adesilex P4 and Ultracolor Plus each feature EMICODE: EC1 Plus (very low VOC) formulations, which promoted a safe application.

Prior to project handover, treatments from Mapei’s UltraCare range of concentrated deep cleaners were used to remove grout film and site dirt residue. They included UltraCare Acid Cleaner, UltraCare HD Cleaner and UltraCare Multicleaner, each from the Zero Line and featuring EMICODE: EC1 Plus (very low VOC) certified formulations.
