Abacus has made history by becoming the first manufacturer in the world to use waste plastic as a substitute bulking material in industry- leading resin flooring instead of the traditional silica sand.
Founder Nick Megson painstakingly researched and developed a process for using multiple grades of waste plastic in resin flooring. An estimated three-quarters of the world’s waste plastic re-enters our environment; some is sent to landfill, while the majority is dumped in the world’s oceans. Nick, a long-time sustainability champion, saw a way creating an environmentally friendly product that completely removed any reliance on silica sand, a heavily mined mineral that is harmful to the environment and to human health.

Abacus Flooring Solutions is a specialist resin flooring company founded in 2020. The firm designs, manufactures and installs resin flooring for a wide range of industrial, commercial and healthcare environments. Founder and MD Nick Megson has invented Abaplas, the world’s first resin flooring system that contains 100% recycled waste plastic.
The groundbreaking result is a product named Abaplas. Abaplas is created by grinding the waste plastic down to a non-harmful colourless powder. The process could also be used to replace carbon-heavy bulking materials in countless other manufactured products, such as tile adhesives, repair compounds and grout. It is a gamechanger.
Abaplas, which is protected by a UK patent, was first used in a new flooring in the enormous VIP Visitor Centre auditorium at JCB’s global headquarters in Staffordshire, UK.

Wembley Stadium also commissioned Abacus to use Abaplas to replace the original resin flooring in its Royal Box. When Nick discovered the stadium was also planning to discard its old plastic seating, he carried out tests on the seats to see if they could be utilised in the new flooring. The tests proved positive, boosting Wembley’s recycling credentials even further.
Abaplas can be installed quickly and cheaply, complete with bespoke safety markings, non-slip surfaces and any other form of design such as company logos, and can be precisely matched to any colour.
Abacus is already in talks with organisations in Malaysia and Canada that are interested in signing long-term agreements for utilising the Abaplas process.
