“It’s absolutely crucial

that leisure businesses persuade potential guests that their

attraction is a safe place to visit.”

Combining hygiene with fun

Chris Wakefield, Managing Director UK & Ireland at GOJO Industries-Europe, explains how customer confidence is key for leisure and hospitality businesses to reopen successfully.

Health and safety have always been closely linked to success when it comes to theme parks and leisure attractions. In today’s world, it’s not only the safety of rollercoasters and rides that counts – that’s a given. It’s also about the steps a resort or destination has taken to prevent the spread of infection.

Following months of restrictions, there’s an understandable wariness when it comes to venturing outside the safety of our homes and into places filled with other people. Therefore, it’s absolutely crucial that leisure businesses persuade potential guests that their attraction is a safe place to visit. For example, a family trip to a theme park can cost a considerable sum of money, so it’s vital that customers have confidence in the levels of hygiene in place, so that they can have fun. Only then will these facilities enjoy a successful reopening.

Hand hygiene is a key infection prevention measure and is one of the most visible ways leisure facilities can protect the safety of its staff and visitors, whilst also demonstrating its commitment to their health.

In fact, it’s exactly what Disneyland Paris has implemented, in conjunction with other measures including enhanced cleaning measures, physical distancing, and the requirement to wear masks. Since its first reopening in 2020, almost 2000 PURELL hand sanitising dispensers and stands have been installed to protect guests, enabling them to enjoy the magic of Disney with additional peace of mind.

The right systems and products

Selecting the right hand hygiene partner can be challenging, though. The pandemic saw a flurry of new brands and products enter the market, which has resulted in a confusingly large choice available – some of which are not fit for purpose. So how do you distinguish between the ones

to avoid and those that will protect from germs, care for skin, and even influence hygienic behaviour?

First and foremost, products need to be effective – but there’s much more to it than efficacy. Formulation comes a close second in the order of importance. After all, if the balance of ingredients is not right, hands can quickly become dry or irritated or result in a poor user experience. Products that are too runny, too smelly, or that irritate skin can put people off using the hand sanitisers provided, ultimately reducing compliance and increasing the risk of transmission of germs around a resort. Protective and pleasant to use, PURELL products have been trusted for decades to care for skin and eliminate germs safely and effectively.

As well as the actual sanitisers and soaps, it’s important to pay attention to the dispensers in which they are housed. One of the most common reasons that non-compliance occurs is not down to complacency or education, but simply that the dispenser is empty. How can people clean their hands if the soap or sanitiser dispenser has run out?

The new PURELL ES8 Dispenser features an innovative ‘AT-A-GLANCE’ design, making it easy to monitor product levels with one quick look, saving both time and labour. It also benefits from breakthrough ‘Energy-on-the-Refill’ technology, enabling continuous touch-free dispensing, without the worry of the battery wearing out and needing to be changed. What’s more, its premium look inspires a sense of confidence and highlights to consumers that hygiene is being taken seriously.

There’s no doubt that enhanced health and safety measures are here to stay. For leisure attractions, this means ensuring staff and visitors are safe and happy, and supplying quality hand hygiene products and equipment that enables them to have fun with confidence.
