Break the chain of infection with new CHSA webinar

moments and providing practical information on how best to approach them.”

Dr John Hines is global Research, Development and Engineering (RD&E) Director for SC Johnson Professional. He received his doctorate in Physical Chemistry at Oxford University before joining Unilever Research. John has held his current position since 2010 and is focused on the development and implementation of better professional hygiene solutions for healthcare, education, food and many other institutional settings.

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the view of cleaning and hygiene forever. Understanding how to break the chain of infection has never been more important.

The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association’s (CHSA) webinar – ‘8 Moments of Targeted Hygiene’ – will help contract cleaners and facilities managers break the chain. The speakers are Professor Sally Bloomfield, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH), and Dr John Hines, Global Research, Development and Engineering (RD&E) Director for CHSA member, SC Johnson Professional.

Dr Hines and Professor Bloomfield were amongst the team of experts who developed the white paper ‘8 Moments of Targeted Hygiene’. In the paper they identify the eight key moments of high risk for spreading infection in workplaces and public facilities.

Lorcan Mekitarian, Chair of the CHSA, will introduce the webinar. He explained: “Infections, including COVID-19, are mostly spread by people interacting directly by touch or airborne routes, or indirectly via surfaces touched by others or infected foods and food surfaces. We want to help people break this chain by spreading the word about the key

Professor Sally F Bloomfield is a consultant in Hygiene and Infectious Disease Prevention, Chairman and member of the Scientific Advisory Board of IFH; Honorary Professor, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is an acknowledged expert on home hygiene, with more than 30 years' experience in hygiene research and education. In 1995, Professor Bloomfield was awarded the Rudolf Schulke Hygiene Prize for her outstanding contribution in the field of hygiene and preventive medicine.

The eight key moments to be included in the webinar are: 1. Entry and exit from a facility of venue. 2. Using the toilet. 3. Before and after touching common surfaces. 4. Before preparing food. 5. Before eating food, especially with fingers. 6. Before and after moving from a workstation. 7. After coughing sneezing and nose blowing. 8. After handling and disposal of refuse.

The Webinar will take place via Zoom at 1PM on Wednesday 22 September 2021, and will last for approximately 90 minutes. For more information, visit the CHSA website.

Worshipful Company gains Chartered

Practitioner approval The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC) has announced it has received a grant of Royal Approval, allowing it to confer the award of ‘Chartered Practitioner in Environmental Cleaning’ to members and establish a register thereof.

The WCEC Education committee has worked tirelessly for a

prolonged period to achieve this new Chartered status. Now

there is a route for members of the cleaning industry to gain a professional credential recognising their skills or expertise. Along with the apprenticeship scheme under development, it provides a clearer career path and continuous professional acknowledgement.

John Shonfeld, Master of the WCEC, said: “Our sector’s invaluable contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic is widely recognised, and it is so richly deserved. We, therefore, continue to build upon our recognition for the specific benefit of individuals who make up the whole. It’s up to all of us to keep our industry standards high and that means formally acknowledging the professionals who contribute throughout our broad sector.”
