LEISURE & HOSPITALITY FACILITIES

CARRY ON CAMPING

During the busy holiday season, campsites and festivals produce billions of tonnes of waste from a variety of waste streams. Tony Mottram, Commercial Director at GPT Waste Ltd, recounts his experience of such challenges.

If you’ve ever been to a festival, you’ll know how extremely disorderly the sites can get. In order for waste levels sent to landfill to be minimised and recycling rates increased, the waste produced there needs to be managed effectively. Through an education process, leisure and hospitality facility waste can be managed more effectively and disposal costs reduced, which means that the cost of waste to the business becomes recognised as a potential revenue stream.

We’ve seen this in action for both challenging festivals and quieter holiday parks; more specifically, working with The Caravan Club in providing total waste management

solutions to over 120 Caravan Club sites in the UK. The Caravan Club provides modern membership-run facilities and they are recognised as the UK’s leader in caravanning experiences. The maintenance and up-keep at these facilities, including the management of waste produced, is an integral part of the service

provision to The Caravan Club members. We work closely with the FMs at multiple sites to manage the waste produced, which forms part of the overall membership service to existing and future members.

The waste streams managed at these sites across the UK include general,

mixed recycling, glass, green waste and ad-hoc hazardous waste. The unique aspect of providing services to the Caravan Club is the large number of sites and their location; some being particularly remote.

FESTIVAL SEASON We have also provided total waste

management solutions for a number of UK concert venues and festivals, such as Creamfields, which is the North West’s major music festival event, held over the August Bank Holiday weekend each year.

Creamfields hosts over 50,000 visitors on each day of the festival, 45,000 of which camp at the site each night, producing in excess of 500 tonnes of waste over the whole weekend. GPT Waste worked with the festival crew and organisers to
