Welcome to the new year and your January edition of WSM to help kick it off!

While the recent holidays and winter break are behind us, the season of joy

does not need to end… Through music education, joy can extend to all times of the year, seeding growth in happiness and fulfillment.

Music educators often deem the joy of teaching as their number one reason for entering the profession. Yet, stressors as- sociated with today’s educational climate can lead to burnout, resulting in self-doubt about the spark that once ignited a music education career.

In an era of teacher retention challenges, shortage of substitutes and other com- pounding factors, this issue focuses on rediscovering the passion for teaching. From sharing meaningful new ways of con- necting with students to celebrating overall successes in and outside the classroom, it’s all about ways of finding joy (again) in teaching.

As we turn the page to our next chapter of 2023, we also remember all who have inspired us along the way. On that note, we share a very special story about a music educator who exemplified the joy of teach- ing… our friend and colleague, Thomas H. Heninger. Find this heart-warming dose of inspiration in “From the Desk of the Execu- tive Director” on page 8.

We wish you much joy in all that you do to continue making a positive difference every day in the lives of our youth. The journey is the reward.

Cheers to you!
