secondary general music
responses were for Hip-Hop, Technology, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, Music Theory and Other. This may indicate that these classes, which may tend towards being teacher designed, are running and teachers need more training – opportunities in pre-service education could expand, but current teach- ers could also use more training, maybe including training specifically on how to design courses that are fit for the school/ district.
Main Takeaways from Collegiate Professors and Students/Pre-Service Teachers
There were limited responses in these groups, but we can still see some patterns. General and History subjects are the most prepared for, along with ensemble classes/ methods, and Technology/Production and Hip-Hop are least prepared for courses. The “traditional” things tended towards higher confidence while more “modern” parts of our discipline were less prepared for/desirable to teach.
Key Takeaways, Next Steps
In summary, here are some main take- aways:
• Educators who teach General Music courses often are teaching in mul- tiple disciplines with low FTE in General Music.
• There is a wide variety of course of- ferings and structures that work, and the elective courses with a specific focus, including those on the more traditional side, tend to run more regularly.
• Teachers tend to feel most confident teaching more traditional courses, but courses that may be less familiar or designed by the teacher do tend to run when offered.
• Changes/Additions in training for pre-service and current teachers may be needed to adjust to student needs and course demands.
Next Steps:
• We will be reaching out to educators who indicated that they are willing to share how to be successful with unique program ideas to find ways
