Composition is included in the National Standards for Arts Edu- cation and is a natural extension of the creativity mode of music specified in Wisconsin’s music curriculum guide. The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the artistic efforts of Wisconsin student composers.

For this project, students submit original compositions, written descriptions and recordings to WSMA by January 29. Wisconsin composers evaluate the original works and students receive a written critique identifying strengths of the submission as well as offering suggestions for improvement in future compositions. Awards are given based solely on merit with winners identified in the High School, Middle School and Intermediate School Divisions.

Students in grades 4–12 may enter in one or more of the follow- ing categories and collaborative compositions can be entered in any category:

Instrumental Solo Instrumental Ensemble Instrumental Jazz Piano Solo Vocal Solo

Vocal Ensemble Vocal Jazz

Collaborative Solo Collaborative Ensemble Miscellaneous

Arrangement (NEW) Electronic Music - audio only (NEW)

Results will be posted on the WSMA website in mid March and the Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 8.
