Because we want to teach – to share our love and empower the music making of others! One of the most exciting sentiments from the music majors had to do with their as- pirations to instill their love and passion for music with the next generations of music makers. This is a sense of music in the future tense, not only in our treasured memories or current creations. One stu- dent noted that she loves how much she is learning – because she knows it will make her a better teacher. Another student who is currently student teaching said he missed making music with others. Despite a busy and unfamiliar schedule, he has chosen to reach out to make music learn- ing opportunities for children. Another student is striving to learn to be the best teacher he can be, regardless of the current
circumstances. He remembers the band teacher who inspired him in high school to be the best musician he could be, to rise to ever-higher expectations, and to share the joy of music making with others. Refer- ring to one of his timeless music making moments with this director, he said, “I knew that this experience is what I wanted to impart to others, and after that perfor- mance I… told Mr. Keyes that I was going to become a band director. He is the big- gest role model I have for my music, and I am forever thankful.” Well, Mr. Keyes, he’s doing it. Despite the pandemic, he is still inspired by you, and he is becoming the finest teacher he can be.
This, then, is our charge. We love music, making music, sharing music and teach- ing music. This brings joy and makes life (pandemic or not) beautiful, meaningful and rich. There is no limit to excellence, and a pandemic will not stop our joy, our
