2021 Drive-In Day “Zoom-In Day”

The WMEA Advocacy Committee has scheduled our 5th

annual Drive-In Day…

now “Zoom-In Day” to the State Capital in Madison in February 2021. As the new title implies, we will be adopting a virtual format this year. The virtual plan will involve contacting legislators in both the Assembly and Senate, recruiting 3–4 of their WMEA constituents, and scheduling a 20–30 minute Zoom call where members would present and discuss the 2021 ASK.

The ASK is typically not defined until January, but supporting requests for state aid to school districts to assist with COVID-19 mitigation efforts is an ex- ample of an ASK that may be pursued.

A virtual format would increase the flex- ibility in scheduling meetings with legisla- tors and allow WMEA members that live a distance from Madison to participate in this meaningful advocacy effort.

NAfME North Central Division Update

Submitted by Richard Tengowski - North Central Division President-Elect

The NAfME North Central Division leaders met in September to share infor- mation, discuss the mission of advancing music education and topics to unify our organization.

There is an intentional focus toward collaboration and community, new ap- proaches to professional development and addressing diversity, equity, inclusion and access in music education. President Spradley has recognized that systemic change will not be easy. She plans to of- fer more communication with members and financial transparency where needed.

NAfME members are invited to participate in a series of virtual Town Hall meetings with President Spradley addressing the future of NAfME and reducing structural racism within NAfME. New approaches to recreating and reimagining the profes- sion and commitment to growing relation- ships are underway. WMEA members are welcomed and encouraged to participate.

NAfME has been influential serving all of its member states. It has helped create new resources such as:

Copyright Guidance for Distance Learn- ing for Music Educators

NAfME COVID-19 Resources

Guidance for Music Education From NFHS and NAfME

NAfME has developed a series of Profes- sional Learning Community webinars to deliver timely and targeted topics pre- sented by experts during COVID-19. This format offers educators the opportunity to engage with webinar presenters live, as well as reference recordings at a later time. All webinars are free and open to the public.

President Spradley has a unifying mes- sage for all of us during these challenging days: “I am NAfME, You are NAfME, We are NAfME!” Together, we can advance music education for all.
