Laboratory Products 39 The Safest Funnel for Chemical Waste
Open containers pose fire and health hazards when collecting liquid waste. The large ARNOLD safety funnel from SCAT Europe GmbH offers double protection thanks to the hinged lid with double seal and ball valve, even harmful solvent residues cannot escape. When not in use, the funnel closes with a quick ‘click’.
The ball valve closes automatically after filling if the funnel is accidentally left open. The integrated dirt sieve catches stirrers or coarse dirt. Laboratory bottles can simply be placed on it to drain. The splash guard provides additional protection and work safety, and the strainer and splash guard can be removed for cleaning.
Thanks to its large diameter of 190 mm, even large amounts of liquid can be collected quickly and safely. The safety lance ensures clean drainage inside the container and at the same time serves as a drip edge to protect the container opening from contamination. The dimensionally stable design brings greater stability, durability and prevents deformation.
With different thread sizes, the funnel fits all standard containers. Also available in antistatic plastic – for safe grounding against ignition hazards. By using high-performance plastics (PE-HD, PE-HD-EL), the funnel achieves a very high level of chemical resistance.
The safety funnel is also available for barrels, with level control to avoid overflowing liquids. More information online:

Versatile Mixer Mill with User-friendly Features
With the new Mixer Mill MM 400 Retsch has developed an extremely versatile bench-top unit which combines easy and safe handling with maximum flexibility for your sample preparation process. It is used for dry, wet and cryogenic grinding of small sample volumes up to 2 x 20 ml.
The MM 400 covers a huge range of applications: from mixing and pulverising to cell disruption for DNA/RNA- and protein extraction and mechanochemical processes.
New features include storage of 12 SOPs and 6 program cycles, a maximum grinding time of 99 hours and the possibility to calibrate time and frequency. This is particularly helpful to ensure highest possible reproducibility and consistent results, as required, for example, in the pharmaceutical industry.
The MM 400 is operated with grinding jars that are available in 7 materials and 6 sizes, including transparent PMMA jars for in-situ Raman spectroscopy, and a range of adapters for single-use vials from 0.2 ml to 50 ml.
The scope of typical sample materials is impressive. The MM 400 is employed in areas like agriculture, biology, chemistry, environment, food, geology, metallurgy, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, to name but a few.

Opening in Quarter 4, 2023, Biopharma Group’s new GMP freeze drying facility is set to provide a much needed resource to pharmaceutical companies needing small batch production facilities for first-in-human trials. With construction having started in January of 2023, the new GMP facility in Winchester, UK, will provide freeze drying for up to 3,200 2R vials in their state-of-the-art ATS Hull S10 freeze dryer, along with full isolation facilities in a grade A cleanroom environment for sterile production of both liquid and lyophilised products.
Global Commercial Manager for Biopharma Group, Tim Lewis, said: “There is a dearth of small scale lyophilised GMP facilities in the UK and Europe and the opening of the new GMP production facility will help provide a service that is currently in short supply to our customers. The additional ability to work with cytotoxic compounds allows us to tailor our service to customers’ GMP needs. Our ability to work on products from first principles, through research and development and finally to GMP production, gives us a unique and unmatched understanding of customers products and the processes that we apply to them”.
Biopharma Group is a leading CDMO in the freeze-drying industry, working with leading pharma and diagnostics companies to turn liquid products into freeze dried versions, giving huge benefits in stability, shelf-life and removal of cold-chain logistics.
The new GMP facility is based at Biopharma Group’s UK headquarters in Winchester and will be available for customer use from Q4 2023. To discuss your GMP requirements contact us today.
