Laboratory Products 27 Accurate Flow Measurement for High Viscosity Liquids

Positive Displacement flow measurement devices, such as Titan Enterprises’ Oval Gear (OG) flowmeters, are a preferred choice for measuring the flow of petroleum liquids and petrochemical additives. They excel in harsh environments, offer high-pressure capabilities, and provide long-term reliability with minimal maintenance. These devices are particularly well-suited for handling viscous fluids.

Specialised oval gear meters are designed with teeth that both drive the gear and seal the central path, generating the necessary differential force. The size and shape of the oval gears can be customized to meet specific flow requirements.

Flow measurement devices equipped with Oval Gears offer a larger surface area, resulting in increased driving pressure and a wider flow range capability with lower pressure drop compared to other positive displacement meters. Higher viscosity liquids require more pressure to flow through the meter, and selecting the correct size of oval gear flowmeter is crucial for accurate measurement.

Neil Hannay, Titan Enterprises’ Senior Development Engineer, explained: “The higher the viscosity of a liquid, the more pressure will be required to ‘force’ the liquid into the flowmeter and around the oval gears. It’s important to bear this in

mind when selecting the correct size of oval gear flowmeter for your application. For example, more pressure will be required to push through resin than diesel.”

Titan’s Oval Gear flowmeters exhibit exceptional resistance to fluctuations in liquid viscosity, density, and temperature. Their measurement accuracy improves as viscosity increases, achieving accuracy of 1% to approximately 0.1% at higher viscosities. Custom-designed models and specially profiled gears are available for viscosities exceeding 1000 cSt, ensuring accurate measurements even in challenging conditions.

To meet high-pressure requirements, chemical compatibility, and safety considerations in explosive atmospheres, Titan Enterprises offers customized options and adaptive designs. Their range includes ATEX-compliant models with IP65/NEMA 4 protection, designed to withstand harsh environments while maintaining accuracy and reliability.

Titan’s Oval Gear meters undergo rigorous in-house pressure testing and can be calibrated against diesel fuel upon request. In the chemical industry, these flowmeters are commonly used alongside batch controllers for automated dispensing of predetermined chemical volumes.

Innovative Freezer Racking for Sustainable Storage Space

Efficient, flexible and sustainable: These are some of the features of Starlab’s newly developed stainless-steel racks for upright and chest freezers. On the one hand, the new series of freezer racks allows samples to be stored easily in a stable and safe manner. On the other hand, the use of freezer racking provides practical and sustainable benefits.

By using freezer racks, laboratories can optimise their freezer’s storage capacity, which in turn leads to greater energy efficiency. “With an optimised storage space and an organised working environment, scientists not only save energy, but also valuable time that they can devote to research. A tidy shelf is not only a symbol of order, but also an important step towards a more sustainable future,” said Denise Fane de Salis, Managing Director Starlab UK.

Manufactured in Germany from 85% recycled stainless steel and in a factory that runs on 100% sustainable energy, the new freezer racks have a reduced carbon footprint, making an important contribution to

sustainability. An organised laboratory freezer can also reduce energy consumption by minimising the time the freezer door is open when searching for samples.

Thanks to the latest laser cutting technology, the shelves have no sharp edges and are easy to slide into place. The new stainless steel freezer racks are suitable for all laboratories requiring a flexible storage solution for their samples, with freezer racks available for both upright and chest freezers.

For upright freezers, there are racks with side access and a folding handle on the front for easy removal, as well as racks with pull-out shelves to provide convenient access to the storage boxes without having to remove the whole rack. These racks feature grippers on the front that ensure easy handling even with special gloves. For chest freezers, tower racks are available with a locking rod to keep samples securely in place, and a handle on the top for easy removal from the freezer. All the new freezer racking is suitable for use with standard storage boxes up to 136 x 136 x 53 mm. The racking for upright freezers with pull-out shelves is also available for use with Starlab’s StarStore 100 storage boxes.
