8 Automated Permeation Analysis Systems for EN 374

When handling dangerous chemicals, it is essential to wear protective clothing that has been tested to ensure it provides suffi cient chemical protection. The level of protection is determined by testing the rate at which chemicals permeate through the material. For gloves to receive certifi cation as ‘chemically protective’ by EN ISO 374-1, they must meet specifi c breakthrough times against several challenge chemicals.

Ellutia has developed an automated system for analysing permeation breakthrough rates. The system includes up to 18 permeation cells and optional automated challenge chemical introduction to increase sample throughput and automation. The cells hold the challenge chemical to one side of the sample material and periodically sample the headspace from the other side to plot the permeation breakthrough. The cells can be operated in series or parallel depending on the test requirements. The Ellutia 200 Series GC then analyses the headspace from the cells, and custom software automatically plots the results in real-time.

Enhanced Degassers for GPC Applications

Biotech Fluidics recently introduced two advanced degassers designed specifi cally for Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) applications. These degassers, known as the DEGASi Plus GPC and DEGASi Plus GPC Semi-Prep, are designed to deliver superior performance and effi ciency.

In liquid chromatography systems, changes in pressure or temperature can cause gas molecules to form bubbles. This can have a negative impact on the precision, accuracy, and performance of the equipment. To mitigate this issue, using an online degasser is a reliable technique for removing dissolved gases from the fl uid stream. These degassers have been proven to prevent bubble formation, reduce noise, and improve baseline stability, thereby ensuring more consistent results. However, some degassers are not suitable for GPC applications that use 100% organic solvents and may struggle to provide optimal performance in these conditions.

To address this issue, Biotech Fluidics has developed the DEGASi Plus GPC and DEGASi Plus GPC Semi-Prep, which are specifi cally designed to provide a solution to this challenge. These innovative high-performance degassers are suitable for use with all commonly used organic solvents, including hexane and chlorinated solvents, and are able to effectively remove dissolved gases by stenting the degasser membrane. This secure internal connection in the fl uidic line is essential for effi cient degassing in GPC and straight phase separations that use 100% organic solvents.

The DEGASi Plus GPC and DEGASi Plus GPC Semi-Prep are not only effective in removing dissolved gases, but they are also user-friendly and nearly silent during operation. These degassers require minimal bench space and are fully compatible with all commercial GPC/ SEC systems. The DEGASi Plus GPC comes with 1-6 channels and utilises a continuous vacuum system monitoring to ensure optimal operational conditions are maintained. Additionally, Biotech Fluidics has included advanced error and leak checking functions, as well as their patented ZHCR® control, to eliminate baseline fl uctuations, providing further innovative features as standard.

With an exceptional chemical compatible fl ow path, this CE and RoHS compliant unit is built to operate seamlessly, even if run continuously (24/7) for more than 5 years. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/EOBy

Simplifi ed Sample Preparation of Dairy Products with Metrohm Inline Dialysis

Nearly any analysis of food products requires some kind of sample preparation to remove particles, fats, proteins, and more from the matrix to guarantee data reliability and safeguard long-term instrumental performance. A free White Paper compares automated Inline Ultrafi ltration and Inline Dialysis to the traditional Carrez clarifi cation procedure for the analysis of dairy products by ion chromatography (IC).

Most sample preparation procedures for food analysis are carried out manually and offl ine, accounting for a signifi cant amount of laboratory work and operating costs. This can also potentially impact the analysis due to human errors. Carrez clarifi cation, which is used to remove proteins and fats from dairy products prior to analysis, involves several manual steps and the addition of specifi c chemicals.

To overcome such time-consuming manual procedures and protect laboratory assets, innovative automated inline sample preparation techniques were developed by Metrohm - among them Inline Ultrafi ltration (for removing particles) and Inline Dialysis (for removing fats and proteins). This White Paper focuses on the results of a six-month study comparing traditional Carrez clarifi cation with automated inline sample preparation techniques for dairy samples. Results show that inline dialysis is a robust and highly effi cient alternative to the traditional manual sample treatment used for dairy samples and other challenging food matrices.

Continuous Assessment of HPLC Pump Performance

The Liquid Chromatography Flowmeter (LCF) from Testa Analytical is a real-time monitoring device for continuously measuring the performance of pumps serving HPLC and uHPLC systems. Traditionally the quality of analytical data from HPLC systems has been determined by periodic checks of a set of measured parameters. This unfortunately just gives you a snapshot of how your HPLC system is performing at a point in time and cannot assure the total quality of an application. Flow rate is one of the most important parameters in any HPLC system, it determines retention time or volume and therefore has a major infl uence on reproducibility. By monitoring the liquid fl ow being delivered to your HPLC system in real-time, the Testa Analytical LCF generates a constant stream of data which is easily correlated to a particular chromatogram, thus achieving true total quality assurance of your application.
