Rapid Direct Mercury Analysis in Soil Samples

The DMA-1 and DMA-80 mercury analysers from Milestone offer a rapid solution to the growing challenge of detecting mercury levels in soil.

The increased presence of mercury in our soils, thanks to industrial processes, the burning of fossil fuels and the use of pesticides, has increased the need to monitor mercury levels in soil and sediment.

Contaminated soil must be excavated and remediated, or depending on the level of contamination, disposed of as hazardous waste.

It’s a time-consuming process, but the Milestone DMA-1 and DMA-80 direct mercury analysers, distributed in the UK by Analytix, help laboratories in the food industry to optimise their mercury analysis processes.

The DMA-1 is a manual single analysis system that is designed for laboratories with low sample throughput. The DMA-80 is an automatic sample analyser with capacity for 40 samples, designed for larger workloads.

Neither system requires any sample preparation prior to analysis thus eliminating the risk of mercury loss and cross contamination. This also means ease of use, low running costs, and no need for handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals. In addition both systems have the advantage of ‘running on air’ that removes the requirement for in-house or bottled gases.

The DMA-1 and DMA-80 have been used to develop the US EPA method 7473. They are also compliant with ASTM D-6722-01 and ASTM D-7623-10.

TSI Environmental DustTrakTM

Aerosol

Monitor achieves MCERTS Certification

TSI Incorporated, a global leader in aerosol instrumentation for over 50 years, expands its innovative line of Environmental DustTrak™ Aerosol Monitors. The three new models meet the Environmental Agency Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) for in- dicative ambient particulate monitors.

Businesses creating emissions that are released into the environment must comply with strict laws and regulations. The emissions monitoring instruments used by these businesses must meet these quality requirements. Having an MCERTS certification enables the Environmental Agency and the user to have the confidence that the instrument accurately monitors environmental emissions. The Environmental DustTrak is a real-time, near-reference solution for facilitating short or long-term out- door environmental monitoring and is easily setup to quickly begin monitoring levels of PM10, PM2.5 or both simultaneously. The Environmental DustTrak™ is housed in a compact, robust, weather-proof enclosure for protection of the instrument. With the addition of a heated inlet, extended life pump (for monitoring higher exposure limits and minimizing maintenance) and 37mm Gravimetric filter cassette for air sample collection, longer runtimes and reliable measurement accuracy with the ability to accommodate for varying temperatures and humidity is enabled.

Additional space inside the enclosure gives the option to add other third party, plug-and-play sensors to monitor other parameters such as Metrology, Gas, Noise, etc. The platform offers excellent flexibility to suit individual project needs. The Cloud Data Management System allows all this multi-parameter data to be accessed remotely and is equipped to send alerts via text and email when user definable ambi- ent concentration limits are exceeded. The Environmental DustTrak Monitor is built upon proven and trusted DustTrak technology that thou- sands of people use every day.

• Construction - Measure dust while minimizing downtime. The Environmental DustTrak can help keep your project on track. The instrument is field serviceable, contains replaceable photometers and has a long pump life. Monitor your project 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. • Environmental Consultants and Engineering Firms - Obtain real-time, near-reference data for environmental monitoring. This instrument is compatible with a variety of sensors to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases, wind speed and more.

Process Training Scheme to Yorkshire Water Engineers

Aqua Enviro rolled out a wastewater process training scheme with Yorkshire Water delivering technical training for Yorkshire Water Product & Process Engineers (PPEs) on key wastewater treatment assets. This particular training scheme is part of a wider package of courses that are being provided to PPE’s to ensure that their role on site is carried out securely and proficiently.

The eight-week training course began on the 5th of January and finished on the 23rd of February 2017. The training was conducted across seven sites throughout the Yorkshire region with over 80 members of Yorkshire Water engineers undertaking the 1-day course.

Aqua Enviro’s Matthew Smyth, Associate Technical Director and Rowland Minall, Operations Manager delivered expert training and support to the PPE’s through a bespoke ASP operations and optimisation training package, which has been specifically designed for Yorkshire Water.

The purpose of the training was to provide the PPE’s with increased knowledge and awareness of the Yorkshire Water ASP assets, which will allow them to operate and optimise more efficiently. The specifically tailored training complements the PPE role; enhancing previously gained skills and develop the site based learning. Through a combination of experience and a comprehensive understanding of wastewater treatment works, Aqua Enviro trainers are able to discuss wastewater specific and site specific issues on the day, ensuring that the training is current, relevant and appropriate to the trainee’s.

Aqua Enviro were supported throughout the roll out of the training programme by Erica Lack who said: “At Yorkshire Water we work hard to be efficient in everything we do. We see efficiency as being a key way we can deliver our commitments to customers. The training from Aqua Enviro will allow us to have technical process conversations with colleagues across the business ensuring that we will take the right action to ensure compliance and optimisation of the assets.”
