viii UK Focus - Air Monitoring New Airborne Fibre Monitor
Copley Scientific (UK) has added the new Model 7400AD real-time fibre monitor from MSP Corporation to its range of air sampling equipment. Designed to automatically detect and count airborne fibres such as asbestos, mineral wool, advanced composites, ceramic and glass, the Model 7400AD emits a visible and audible alarm when concentrations reach user-defined levels. Non-fibrous background particles are automatically ignored.
The ability to detect potentially hazardous fibres in the air is essential before, during and after asbestos removal. It is also a key analytical device in manufacturing operations that use fibre raw materials and for monitoring air safety following uncontrolled releases, such as fires, earthquakes or explosions.
Housed within a compact unit, the 7400AD is field-portable with a rechargeable battery pack. Fully charged, it will operate unattended for up to eight hours while simultaneously collecting sample on standard filters for subsequent microscopic or chemical analysis. Each 7400AD is factory-calibrated with traceability to NIOSH Method 7400 for asbestos fibres and the on-board, specialised software allows users to set a range of performance features to customise the operation.

ABB Unveils the Result of a 5 MCAD Investment Project: the MB3000 Spectrometer
ABB, a leading power and automation technology group, is proud to unveil its new MB3000 spectrometer. The development of this analyser was in part supported by the Canadian Space Agency, and which required an investment of more than 5 MCAD over three years.
The MB3000, a Fourier Transformed Infrared analysis system, represents a major technological breakthrough into the market of low-cost, high-performance equipment. It will be used in laboratories as well as in industrial processes to analyse multiple chemical components in the final quality control of several common products used daily. ABB developed the rugged, highly reliable instrument, offering exceptional performance and ease of use in response to increasing customer demand.
The Interferometer, the heart of the instrument, combines 20-year proven technology with one recently developed for aerospace application, thanks to the Canadian Space Agency’s technology development program. This interferometer, which in fact is a miniaturised module used in satellites, has been integrated into the new design of the analyser. The small footprint of the MB3000 requires very little workspace, meeting the needs of today’s overcrowded laboratories. The innovative system was developed by a multidisciplinary team of ABB’s experts.

With budgets under pressure everywhere, the good news is that Casella (UK) is offering customers an incentive to upgrade their monitoring instrumentation.
An old-for-new replacement scheme can save users up to 30% on new replacements, plus the company is offering a 50% reduction on its Microdust to encourage SHE professionals to work with real-time dust data.
Real time dust monitoring allows you to quickly assess workplaces and individual tasks for inhalation hazards enabling you to make instant decisions, rather than waiting days for retrospective gravimetric data gained from traditional personal air samplers. The 50% discount applies to all Microdust Real Time Dust Monitors and the Dust Detective area monitoring unit.
Although the old-for-new replacement scheme does not apply to already discounted products, it does bring substantial savings to all other Casella monitoring technology when old products in any condition and from any manufacturer are traded in for disposal. The savings of up to 30% are available on equipment such as sound level meters, dust monitors and air sampling pumps, and should enable SHE professionals to proceed with necessary equipment upgrades despite budgetary limitations imposed upon them.
